  • Well-maintained and peaceful farm site in the Staffordshire Moorlands
  • A 10-minute drive from Leek and on the edge of the Peak District
  • Surrounded by 150 acres of hills and woodland for wanders
Set off on a foray at Fairboroughs Farm Caravan Site and you’ll be in good company – this spot 10 minutes’ drive from Leek, with roots stretching as far back as the 13th century, has been a popular place for stays in the Staffordshire Moorlands and on the edge of the Peak District National Park since 1967. Visitors are said to return to this place year after year, because of the Lowe family’s hospitality as well as the lovely location, so it’s a brill bet for friendly breaks in scenic surrounds. Make sure to pull the owners aside for a chat after you arrive – they’re always happy to share info on the local area, including which country pubs they’d recommend. Speaking of the surrounds, they're chock-full of cycling and walking trails. While on wanders through the 150 acres of hills and woodlands circling the park, stay on the lookout for red deer as several guests have spotted these rare creatures prancing about. Cast your gaze over the working sheep farm’s animals too, including hundred of ewes and lambs, along with free-range chickens, ducks, pet ponies and dogs. Got your own canine? They’re welcome to come along for a hol as long as they’re well behaved. Other key bits and bobs to note are that the TV reception’s decent at the park and there’s a security gate for safety. Off site, Rudyard Lake’s a 10-minute drive away for sailing, fishing, canoeing and row boating.

Old Orchard fully-serviced concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: Beautiful location friendly and helpful hosts. Amazing views looking over this hills and valley. We were staying in The Orchard so had a bit more privacy and dedicated space to our pitch, fully serviced water and power (10A supply). Very clean facilities and indeed the whole site, although a working farm, this added to the ethos and didn’t disturb us. Site entrance was very secure with plenty of space to pull off the road when we first got there, buzzed down to our hosts and they opened the gate to let us in, meeting us at the bottom of the drive to give us details of the site, history and fob to come and go as we pleased.

Old Orchard fully-serviced concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: Great welcome, Huge Orchard fully serviced pitch with fantastic views. We were lucky with the weather, Rudyard reservior and Tittesworth Lake is a must. Many thanks.

Disliked: As usual on camp sites our two small dogs were kept on leads, unfortunately the owners dogs were allowed occassionally to roam freely, and we saw them weeing on our awning and the wooden bench and table put there by the owners. They were very friendly dogs, but because ours were tethered, they barked so had to be taken inside the caravan each time which was a little frustrating, as we wanted to abide by the site rules of it being a very quiet site.

Local attractions

Start explores at the market town of Leek (10 minutes’ drive), particularly paying attention to the wares in the antique shops, before setting forth for more pretty Peak District towns, like Buxton (half an hour) and Bakewell (45 minutes). Other renowned destinations in the national park are within easy reach too – check out Chatsworth House’s 25 rooms, including highlights like the Painted Hall and Sculpture Gallery (50 minutes), or stay closer to the site with roams around The Roaches (20 minutes), a 505-metre-high rocky ridge above the Tittesworth Reservoir. Outside the Peak District, rev things up with a go on the rides of Alton Towers (half an hour), England’s second most visited theme park after Legoland, then follow up with a calmer couple of hours at Rudyard Lake (10 minutes). This 168-acre reservoir owned by the Canal & River Trust has boats for hire and is also fab for fishing.
