  • Luxury glampsite with hot tub, 12 miles from the Peak District
  • Everything provided including linen and luxury toiletries
  • Finnish barbecue cabin, cooking cabin, breakfast and private firepits
Settle down for a whole lot of luxury near the Peak District at Peake's Retreats, a glampsite in the Staffordshire countryside 10 minutes’ drive from Burton upon Trent. The Peake's Retreats setting is champion for outdoor days close by or further afield, with Dovedale's limestone valleys half an hour’s drive away and several standout walks from just outside the site (including one to the local village Anslow and the much-recommended Bell’s Inn). Hardier hikes and climbs in the Peak District are about 12 miles away. But you might just want to laze around on site instead… If so, the accommodation here is set up to provide everything you need, from towels and bed linen to cutlery, plates and glasses; there are also luxury bathrooms with Neal’s Yard toiletries and lashings of hot water. Another huge highlight of the site (see pics) is the large and swish Finnish barbecue cabin for cooking over the coals whatever the weather – although you could also sort supper in the kitchen cabin with its big electric range. Outdoors, there’s a firepit flanking each unit and a massive communal barbecue in the picnic area next to the playground. Need more convincing? Each unit has its own hot tub, allowing you to submerge for a soak beneath the Staffordshire skies…

Local attractions

Amble with alpacas beside the River Trent or cruise along the water in a canoe; the site’s knowledgeable staff can divulge the details on how to go about either. You can also get the kids go-karting at the National Forest Adventure Farm, five minutes’ drive away, or bouncing around in the soft play area. Hark back to your own younger days at Sudbury Hall and the National Trust Museum of Childhood, a 15-minute drive, for an educational expedition in a country manor. For teenage kicks instead, Drayton Manor Theme Park is half an hour away, while the Nemesis and Oblivion rides at Alton Towers can be reached in 35 minutes. The Go Ape high-ropes course in Stoke, balancing above the treetops, is a 35-minute drive away and should appeal to intrepid types of all ages with its zipwires and climbing nets. To get your lactic acid flowing even more, set out to cycle the Tissington Trail, setting off from the car park at Ashbourne (30 minutes away by car).
