  • Dog-friendly grass pitches behind a country pub in Shropshire
  • A 15-minute drive from Wyre Forest, Severn Valley Railway and Bewdley
  • Food and real ales served at indoor or outdoor seating
Pub grub, real ales and countryside walks… your day might go this way at The Royal Oak Campsite, set behind a Shropshire country pub in the characterful little village of Alveley. This place is 15 minutes’ drive away from Wyre Forest, the Severn Valley Railway and the West Midland Safari Park, so the dog-friendly grass pitches make quite a merry base for getting out to all sorts of varied activities on your break. One of the highlights here has to be the pub itself. Built in the 1800s and added to over the years, today it has a great food menu with real ales available to wash down your meal. You’ll be able to eat indoors or outdoors, depending on how you feel (and how the weather's behaving…). Dogs are allowed to accompany you on your trip here, as long as they’re kept on leads at all times. Whether you’ve got a canine companion or not, there are lots of local walks for you to get out on, including a trail to the river at Arley (a little over an hour’s walk away). The pitches have 24-hour access to toilets and showers, so the basics are covered. Barbecues also have the go-ahead, and if you’re looking to piece together a good spread, the nearest food shop is only around the corner (five minutes’ walk away).

Local attractions

Which way to Wyre Forest (half an hour’s drive)? That’s a question you might want to ask if you like the idea of hiking or biking through oak trunks and gliding over the canopies on the Go Ape zipwires. When you’re poring over your map, be sure to circle the Arley Arboretum & Garden (five minutes) to check out some more local and exotic plants. Another local spot is Dudmaston Estate (five minutes), which is a National Trust property hailing from the 17th century – a short look around the parklands and house will make that clear. As for recalling other interesting times in history, the Drakelow Tunnels (10 minutes) are a former underground military complex beneath a country park and the Severn Valley Railway (15 minutes) runs steam train trips between restored stations. Where else might you want to add to your Shropshire itinerary? Well, if you’re a big fan of safari animals and rides, the West Midland Safari Park (15 minutes) is one place. Watersports are a big part of Bewdley (15 minutes) on the River Severn, while at Merry Hill Centre Brierley Hill (half an hour) there’s a shopping centre and retail park where you can search for bargains.

Liked: The owner of the site was very nice and helpful, lending us a hookup extension when ours wasn't long enough and happily explaining the site to us on arrival. We had a scary situation where we had to call an ambulance in the night for our baby and the owner was right there making sure we had what we needed to get out quickly, and after a quick hospital visit (baby all fine in the end) we were back at the sight in the morning for a nice lie-in. Enjoyed our short stay and would visit again when back in the area!

Liked: Location good for West Mids Safari Park, clean toilets and showers. Good size showers with space for changing and clothes hooks.

Disliked: Showers a bit cooler, but expected this time of year. Dont drive across grass if wet, neighbours got stuck and had to be towed out. On a main road so slightly noisy.
