  • Small-scale Shropshire site in the small village of Walcot
  • A 15-minute drive from Telford and Shrewsbury
  • Laidback site, with dogs, barbecues and campfires allowed
When touring in Shropshire, there are a few places you've got to tick off along the way – Ironbridge Gorge, the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Shrewsbury, the county town, are all sure to be on the list. That's where Wrekin View Retreat comes in – this smashing little spot is within easy reach of all the local sights and, as its name suggests, is just a short distance from The Wrekin, an impressive hill a few minutes' drive from base that makes a great hike. This spot is very quiet, hosting just a handful of guests at any one time. With private access, secure grounds and a peaceful environment, it makes an appealing proposition for those that like their holidays on the low-key side. It's very laidback too, with dogs, barbecues and campfires all allowed (just use your common sense and follow all instructions from site staff). The facilities here are simple but well-maintained, with toilets, a wash basin and a well-maintained rustic shower for guests who haven't brought their own amenities. Please note that the only waste disposal available is for dog waste – please take all litter home with you. Wrekin View Retreat is in the small village of Walcot, just a few minutes' walk from a local pub and a short pedal from scenic National Cycle Route 81.

What customers say

Awesome hosts, chill vibes, great views! Site's neat, clean, and a bit quirky (showers!). Secluded spots for max privacy. Bit of a wait for the dunny sometimes, but generally good and clean.

Wrekin View powered gravel motorhome site

Liked My first trip in newly converted small camper, just me and my little dog Connie. I got a bit lost and rang Kate who was really helpful and met me at end of the drive. Kate very friendly and explained everything during a tour on arrival, all you need to enjoy a comfortable stay, very chilled site and no marked out pitch you have to stay within etc. I have on board facilities but to be honest all you need is right there close to all pitches, shower ( quirky but very efficient), camper’s kitchen area so you can wash up etc and a single toilet which is adequate for the small number of pitches in my opinion, and all clean and well maintained. Kate and her mum are attentive but not intrusive, friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The views are amazing and it is a tranquil setting. Very dog friendly and few rules, common sense really, Connie got to play with lots of dogs as Kate has dog walking business and brings her charges to exercise in the large paddock so Connie got to join in. Obviously dogs need to get along and be reasonably quiet as not all guests bring dogs and just want to enjoy the site in peace. There is a great pub a mile up the road, easy walk for those able, my knees feel older than me most days so Kate kindly gave me a lift a couple of times 🤣 this is definitely on my list to revisit soon. We saw beautiful sunrises and were treated to an amazing moonrise which Kate alerted us all to, a benefit of having hosts that are proud of what they have to offer and appreciate where they call home. Can’t wait to plan more time off for another visit.

Liked Peaceful and quiet, lovely hosts, fabulous quirky shower (made us giggle!) super clean, very nice pitches, laid back, great location. It’s unlike any site we’ve stayed at. It’s not just a field! You feel like you’re on a country estate.

Liked Peacefulness of the site. Pitches are secluded away from others. Friendly and helpful family running the site.
We loved the fact that there was nothing around near the site locally which allowed you to kick back and relax.

Liked We happened across this site as we rushed to find better weather and we could not have been luckier. The setting is stunning and the facilities awesome and quirky too. The whole site is immaculate too. Kate is a brilliant host friendly, relaxed and helpful...her feline assistant Stripes is also fabulous. We can't wait to go back.

Disliked We couldn't stay longer...

Local attractions

The Wrekin can be seen from all around here and can be reached by car in about 10 minutes. There are paths up both sides of the hill, with one that's gentler on the knees and another rougher route for those that appreciate a good challenge. There are plenty more climbs, rambles and cycle rides on offer if you head 20 minutes or so to the south to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – Church Stretton (30 minutes) is always a good place to start. To the east is Telford (15 minutes) and Ironbridge (20 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a proud industrial past. As well as the Iron Bridge itself, this scenic stretch of the Severn is home to sights as varied as Buildwas Abbey (20 minutes), museums dedicated to tiles and china (20 minutes) and Benthall Hall (25 minutes), a National Trust property. In the other direction, you have Shrewsbury town centre (15 minutes), where boat trips, history walks and independent shops are on offer. Alternatively, on the outskirts of town there are historic sites like Wroxeter Roman City (10 minutes), Attingham Park (10 minutes), a stately home with gorgeous grounds, and Haughmond Abbey (15 minutes).
