  • Small meadow site edging a peaceful village in Shropshire countryside
  • A 25-minute drive to Shrewsbury; 30 minutes to Ironbridge Gorge Museum
  • No-frills camping on a flat meadow; pub and shop nearby
Fancy the idea of sloping off to Shropshire for a bit of back-to-basics field camping? The Rookery, tucked away in the sleepy village of Ryton near Dorrington, south of Shrewsbury, is just the spot for you. Bring the kids and set yourselves up wherever you please on the peaceful camping field shaded by trees, and in the grounds of a handsome country house. This is a small site with a limited number of pitches available in a large meadow, which means lots of space and privacy for everyone. Thereā€™s no electricity, and no-frills amenities only stretch to portable toilets and mains water, so youā€™ll need to bring torches with you to get around after dark. The Rookery is well located for biking along National Cycle Route 81, which goes right through the village (five minutesā€™ drive) on its way to pretty Shrewsbury, and thereā€™s walking galore to be had on local hills including the Caradoc, Long Mynd and Stiperstones. You can barbecue on site (pick up essentials in Dorringtonā€™s convenience store, a 15-minute walk away) and thereā€™s a welcoming pub too (1.3 miles along the road or a short stroll through the fields), where you can tuck into roasts and burgers.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Liked that we were the only ones on site. There were some football goals which my boys enjoyed.

Disliked: Sadly the problem was the chemical toilet which if there was more than just our family it could have been a lot worse. Also there was no proper sink to wash dishes, brush teeth or wash our faces.

Liked: Fantastic location, beautiful views, quiet and minimal. I love this kind of campsite as you know you will get a good night's sleep and won't be in a crowded site with hundreds of other we people. I would recommend to anyone who likes no hassle minimalist camping. Would be great for hikers.
