  • Off-grid campsite with spectacular views over the Shropshire Hills
  • Ironbridge Valley of Invention 25 minutes’ drive; hiking from site
  • Spacious grass pitches in a dark-skies area; shops 15 minutes’ drive
Are you ready for a real off-grid experience? One with spectacular views over hills on the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with lots of walking options right from the camping field… and the chance to see buzzards or red kites flying overhead? If it’s yes to all those questions, then haste ye to Spring Field Dark Skies Camping. On-site numbers are kept low to provide spacious pitches and privacy for all guests, and keep the ‘away-from-it-all’ vibe of the place. Facilities are simple: solar power for the electricity and a private water supply (there’s also wifi – the kids will be pleased). In terms of amenities, there are flushing toilets with hot hand-washing facilities and separate grey and black water disposal available. There is also a drive-on grey water point for motorhomes. If you’re keen to hone your barbecuing skills, pick up gourmet treats from the well-known butcher in Much Wenlock (15 minutes by car) to grill on the communal firepit. Otherwise there are several traditional pubs serving good grub within about the same distance, and Shrewsbury’s only 35 minutes away for big nights out. By the way, the site’s in a dark-skies area, so if you get a clear night, don’t miss the chance to see the stars glittering in the heavens far above you. It's also eco-friendly: a solar installation provides all electrical supplies and water come from an underground aquifer. Keep your eyes peeled, as the open field management attracts many birds of prey. There are many more eco features, including eco-friendly mowers and recycling facilities.

Power optional grass campervan site (small, four person)

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay at Spring Field. It's a a beautiful location and the view is spectacular. We saw lots of wildlife (Buzzards, Kites, Deer, Owls) and on the clearer night the sky was spectacular. We wanted a quiet peaceful weekend and that's what we had. The hosts are really friendly and were happy to share information about the site and local area. We were also treated to a couple of eggs from their chickens. The site is self sufficient and eco friendly which is also a massive bonus. We will definitely be going back 🙂

Power optional grass campervan site (small, four person)

Liked: The hosts were very accommodating and friendly who had no problems with us moving pitches due to weather conditions. The site had a very friendly atmosphere where everyone made conversation with each other. The views were breath taking and we loved waking up to the Shropshire view. You had everything you needed including little touches such as the fire pit, pizza oven and logs to create your own fire. The site was very clean and tidy.

Disliked: The port-a-loo toilets. I mean I know we’re camping so it’s not luxury but didn’t really enjoy doing my business next to spiders and moths. I turned around and there was a spider on the toilet roll! Wasn’t a fan of that. But apart from that everything was lovely.

From the manager: Oops. I should point out that these are not just any Portaloos... They are flushing toilets with hot and cold water, loo brushes, lined bins, fresh air blocks, hand wash and sanitiser. They also have astra turf carpet. I've told that naughty spider to eat the moth and then get back into his electric box where he normally lives and stop frightening the campers.

Liked: Just spent a lovely few days on Spring Field Dark Skies campsite. What a beautiful site with stunning views - very quiet and secluded but exactly what we wanted! The owners were so welcoming and helpful, sharing some nearby walks - The Lawley was a firm favourite! Our first time visiting this area but definitely won’t be our last!!

Local attractions

If you’re an active family looking for sporty pursuits, whizz around on quad bikes, try an archery session or improve your aim while shooting clays at The Edge Adventure Activities (15 minutes’ drive). Go pony trekking in the Shropshire Hills (25 minutes), or take to the water in a kayak on the River Severn (half an hour). And of course, there are loads of hiking trails to explore on foot or by bike (an electric bike might make some of those hills easier though). Sneak a bit of history into the holiday mix with a potter around the ruins at Wroxeter Roman City (20 minutes), where you can also see a recreated Roman townhouse, and move forward to the 18th century at National Trust - Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (15 minutes) to admire the Italianate villa built by mega-architect John Nash. To continue the cultural theme, plan to spend a day discovering the numerous museums and attractions at Ironbridge Valley of Invention (25 minutes), where highlights include the chance to get dressed up in period hats at Blists Hill Victorian Town, pull a locomotive down the track at Engenuity or go deep underground in a tunnel oozing with bitumen.
