  • Private site on a working organic farm in the Tern valley
  • Two miles from the town of Market Drayton
  • Top spot for stargazing and bat spotting
For a sweet stay in the countryside, you can’t go far wrong with Fordhall Organic Farm, a 140-acre organic farm two miles from the centre of Market Drayton in Shropshire’s Tern valley. The area around Market Drayton is the place to start your Shropshire adventuring: take a stroll around Wollerton Old Hall Garden or Hodnet Hall Gardens, both within 10 minutes’ drive of the site, or take part in a tour at Joule’s Brewery two miles from Fordhall. Market Drayton is also known as the home of gingerbread and the town used to be full of gingerbread bakeries, each with their own recipe – while only one factory remains, you’re sure to pick up some of the spicy biscuits in the local shops and markets. When you tire of adventures, head back to Fordhall. It's England’s first community-owned farm, and has been producing organically since shortly after World War II. The bulk of your foodie needs will be catered for on site: sample the grub at Arthur’s Kitchen or pick up supplies to cook over the barbecue at the farm shop. You can even stroll over to the edible garden for a quick snack of gooseberries or currants – just the ticket for midday munchies. Fordhall is a top spot for stargazing – bring a telescope with you to get closer to the celestial bodies or, if you’re more interested in what’s happening a little nearer the ground, hire one of the site’s bat detectors to listen to the calls of the bats in the sky above you.

Local attractions

Take a trip back in time on the Telford Steam Railway – as a passenger or driver – then visit the ruins of Moreton Corbet Castle or the gardens of Cholmondeley Castle, all within 30 minutes’ drive of Fordhall. To keep one foot in the past on a day out with a difference, head over to Ironbridge Gorge Museums, 30 minutes from the site, to step into the abandoned clay pipe factory and cross the Severn on the world’s first cast-iron bridge. Another excellent option is to xplore the homes of the well-heeled at the Darby houses and live like the Victorians did in the Blists Hill recreated town. For some outdoor adventuring, explore the woods, caves and historic monuments at Hawkstone Park Follies 10 minutes from Fordhall, or do something a little more exotic with a visit to Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom and Monkey Forest, both 30 minutes away.
