The farm seen from the hill

  • Rural Shropshire Hills escape five minutes from Bishop's Castle
  • Walking, horse riding and mountain biking all nearby
  • Luxury shower block with hairdryers; campers' kitchen and firebowls
Are you up for a countryside stay in a wildlife haven? How about stargazing, mountain biking or horse riding, all in the splendid scenery of the Shropshire Hills? Make your way for all this and more to the scenic site of Woodbatch Camping and Glamping. There are quite a few little touches on this small family-run farm to make stays comfy and easy, from the luxury shower and toilet block with hairdryers, to the campers' kitchen with hot water, fridge freezer, kettle, microwave and toaster, to the most excellent firebowls for guests' use, upcycled from old washing machine drums. And everything's free to use, because Woodbatch Camping and Glamping is just that type of siteā€¦ Middlebatch is a 17th-century working farm in a wildlife, birdwatching and walking haven in the Shropshire Hills, five minutes' drive from the friendly market town of Bishop's Castle, near Offa's Dyke Path, and in a prime and peaceful locale for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. There's no light pollution in these parts, so the area is a hit with stargazers too. Run expertly by Mary, the site also has a large disabled-friendly and family shower room as well as recycling facilities and a full breakfast takeaway menu.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Views - stunning Pitches have been levelled to make putting the tent up easy. Firepits and picnic tables are a lovely touch. My daughter was colouring at the table even as we were pitching the tent! Hot showers and toilets are great and even on a bank holiday weekend they were clean and well stocked. Having fridge also makes it a bit easier storing some food. Overall such a lovely site.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Very friendly owner xxx. Super, clean facilities. Even though it was busy at the weekend it never felt overcrowded. Lovely, large pitches and loved the picnic table and fire pit for each pitch. Very friendly site. Beautiful area with great walks and historic places to visit. Particularly loved Ludlow castle. The Long Mynd was brilliant although the drive up and down again was a bit scary! šŸ¤£ EXCELLENT BREAKFAST cooked by the owner. A real treat! What a great place for a holiday for all ages.

Disliked: Nothing! A beautiful site and a great holiday.

Liked: Did not stay in a motorhome pitch, stayed in a pod. And it was lovely. Pod was clean and comfortable. My kids enjoyed the telly, whilst I enjoyed the terrace. Food at the clubhouse was lovely. Staff were all really helpful and very friendly.

Liked: Facilities were great View was awesome Found a small bike trail adjacent to the camping pitch using a bridle path where the path forks to either go into forest or towards pasture land. Take the pasture land(right) Hosts were lovely people especially Steve Austin Used my roof tent with no issues . Small town a mile down the road was pleasant and the ale was good.

Disliked: Nothing. Very honest camp site .

Liked: Open site with lovely views, and loved that each pitch had a picnic table and fire pit! The hosts were very welcoming and chilled

Disliked: The kitchen facilities were basic - ok for our needs, but have stayed at sites with better.

From the manager: Hi, thanks for taking the time to write this review. We are glad you enjoyed our views & you made use of the free fire bowls & picnic tables that come with every pitch. Was a bit surprised that you found our kitchen facilities basic as never had this comment before in fact we have the opposite comment. 2 large fridge freezers, kettle, microwave ,toaster ,washing up sinks with unlimited hot water. What else could we provide? Many thanks Mary

Liked: Great campsite in lovely quiet location on a working farm. Very clean facilities and well equipped internal washing up area with a kettle, microwave, toaster, fridge and freezer and charging points. Welcoming and helpful owners. We had an 8 year child with us and enjoyed some good walks. Nearby Carding Mill Valley and The Bog Visitor Centre (for tea and cake if it's raining!) recommended.

Disliked: Nothing in particular about campsite itself but to note that there is only a small supermarket in Bishop's Castle so may you want to stock up at Ludlow or Church Stretton with bigger supermarkets.

Local attractions

This is such an excellent area for all sorts of outdoor activities, and the views and scenery are pretty spectacular tooā€¦ Woodbatch Camping and Glamping is surrounded by an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways to wander and canter, and is close to Kerry Ridgeway, Offa's Dyke, the Jack Mytton Way, the B.C. Ring and the Long Mynd. The Shropshire Way and the Blue Remembered Hills bridleways pass through the farmyard. Bishop's Castle, dating back to the eighth century and King Offa, is five minutes' drive or about 50 minutes' walk away: there's quite a bit to find out about local history in this locale and along Offa's Dyke, and these days the town has a busy market, large cattle and sheep market, and little shops along the high street selling local produce. Church Stretton, Ludlow and Shrewsbury are all within easy reach, as are quite a few castles and quite a lot more splendid scenery. You could also take a look at Acton Scott Victorian Farm, Blists Hill Victorian Town, the hill of Stiperstones and the aircraft and exhibitions of the RAF base at Cosford.
