The site

  • Off-grid site on a mushroom farm in rewilded Rutland countryside
  • A 15-minute drive to Rutland Water, and 20 minutes to Belvoir Castle
  • Outdoor kitchen and wildlife watching on site; pub a 30-minute walk
Totally off-grid, The Mushroom Farm Campsite feels like a proper pioneering camp. Set on the edge of an 11-acre reserve (which you’re free to wander, by the way), it’s at the end of a little track from the farming village of Thistleton in rural Rutland. Off-grid it may be, but nevertheless there are a few creature comforts on hand. Each spacious pitch has a canvas tent with a proper double mattress (bedding and towels included) plus camp beds for the kids (please bring a roll mat, sleeping bag and towels for any extra children). Outside, there’s a spot for campfires, a cooking shelter, gas stove, kitchen utensils and crockery. Oh, and your very own private bucket shower, composting toilet and solar lights. Fresh water is provided in large water containers. Guests are given a number code for the gate and an info pack in their tent. The hosts are available by phone and are a 10-minute drive away if you have any problems. This is not a manicured site and you’ll be sharing it with wildlife – frequent visitors include songbirds, red kites, kestrels, owls, bats, lizards, frogs and toads, snakes, rabbits and hares, muntjac deer, mice, foxes, dragonflies, butterflies, moths and beetles… The camp is set on a mushroom farm with the young trees and large areas left to rewild. This means flowering thistles and uneven ground so it may not be suitable for babies, very young children or people with health conditions.

Chicken of the Woods unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Everything. Hist (Abbie) was friendly & helpful. Pitch was great, toilets were good and spotless (was expecting a Glastonbury stench when I seen composting in the description but not at all). Logs can be bought on site (& a little shop in a tent). Would def return and will recommend to others.

Disliked: Nothing negative to say about this lovely place.

Liked: We loved the mushroom farm!! Everything we needed and nothing more. Beautiful setting...we saw pheasants and rabbits near the site when we went for a wander in the morning. Plenty of water provided, logs and other supplies can be purchased from the camp shop. I believe you can even walk across the fields to a pub but we didn't have time...we'll have to do that next time!!

Penny Bun unpowered grass tent site

Liked: What a fantastic site. We camped for one night but wanted to stay longer! Its a very peacefull site and is surrounded by nature. The pitches aren't close to neighbouring campers which gives you space to chill. The toilets were very clean and the shower was fun. There were containers of water for washing up at the pitch alongside a fire pit. We had a nosey at the Safari and Bell tents and would love to give those a try. Abbie who runs the site was very friendly and quick to reply to any texts. We would definitely recommend this site.

Shaggy Ink Cap unpowered grass tent site

Liked: In nature Pitch we had was private. Plenty space. Not busy. Pleasant owners and helpful over the phone

Disliked: Grill for the fire pit would be helpful. Showers didn't really work. Was just a trickle of water from the red colour bags. Other colour ones seemed to work better. Width of paths for cars needs to be widened for cars that are a little wider Even smallest of plants will scratch the body work.

Giant Puffball unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Lovely, quiet and quirky little campsite. The hosts made contact via text before we arrived, so we knew we could contact them if needed. We were brought extra water so we had plenty to use. The solar shower is a load of fun, and quite warm when topped up with some hot water from the fire. Loos are composting, with lovely solar lighting, and were clean and well equipped. The little camp shop was full of useful things, like wood, bug candles, torches and treats. And the honesty box/bank transfer made this work out in the sticks.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike really. Would have loved if there were some BBQ grills for the fire pits on each camp spot - save having to transport one from home.

Penny Bun unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Rustic, quaint and quiet campsite. Compost toilets were very clean. Lovely subtle lighting, beautiful area surrounded by wildflowers and trees… and the campsite has a tent shop! Would defiantly recommend!

Disliked: As a hayfever sufferer in June had to take a double dose. So don’t forget your tablets!
