  • Adults-only touring park 15 minutes’ drive from Oakham in Rutland
  • Aqua Park Rutland 15 minutes’ drive, and Burghley House 20 minutes
  • Free use of coarse-fishing lakes; woodland walks and wildlife on site
Here’s chance to hone your fishing skills at Stretton Lakes Touring Park, an adults-only site set in 120 acres of farmland, 15 minutes’ drive from Oakham in the middle of Rutland countryside. All campsite guests have free angling on the park’s seven coarse-fishing lakes – and you don’t need to walk very far, as there’s fishing right in front of every south-facing, hardstanding lakeside pitch. Not too enamoured of fishing? The tourer pitches are surrounded by loads of footpaths, excellent for wanderings with – or without – any accompanying dogs (if your pet gets muddy, don’t fret as the site has its own dedicated canine showers). You’re welcome to get lost in neighbouring Stretton and George Henry woods, and if you tread quietly on your way, you may get to see the fallow deer that also sometimes graze around the pitches. There are two award-winning pubs within walking distance, so you can forget about driving and enjoy a big night out. Book well ahead of time and have a wander down to Stretton or Clipsham villages (both 20 minutes’ walk) for gourmet dining treats. A few practical details now: modern shower facilities are top-notch, with rainfall showers in private cubicles, smart oak washstands and stone basins. You can keep on top of the laundry too, thanks to on-site washing machines and tumble dryers.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: The site was beautiful. Serene, quiet and very scenic. The shower and washing area was very clean and to high specification. SO happy its dog friendly, as our two labs loved all the walks in the area and all the fuses they got. Also nice to have a dog washing station. Everyone, staff and other campers were all so friendly. Loved the woods on the doorstep (so to speak) and lovely walk to stretton village, with a stop off at the pub for a fantastic dinner!

Disliked: Nothing, its a lovely site!

Fully-serviced grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: Fantastic toilet and shower facilities. Well spaced and level pitches.

Disliked: We paid £20 extra per night for the use of the toilets/showers which we feel is excessive. The cheaper pitches were not allowed to use the facilities. Only one bin/elsan point which is at the far end of the site.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: The site is absolutely lovely; great place, lovely walking opportunities on the doorstep, maintained pathways and greenery. The pitch set up is very generous in size, good mix of gravelled and grassed areas. The toilet block makes you feel like you’re not caravanning - modern and luxury!

Disliked: Nothing at all!

Fully-serviced grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: Access was good, excellent pitch locations, easy check in, well looked after site, the best washrooms we have ever seen on a campsite!

Disliked: Only one Elsan (could also be a positive), bins crammed full the three days we were there. Dogs loose/off lead round the lakes.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: Der Platz liegt sehr günstig gelegen.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: Beautiful caravan park , well laid out , immaculately clean and tidy , wonderful shower and washroom facilities , efficient and friendly in reception and the fishing is excellent ( 38 carp over 3 days plus bream roach and perch ) . So impressed I have booked another stay within 24 hours of being home .

Disliked: The odd couple who walk their dogs OFF leads after reception has shut ! But that goes on at all sites .

Local attractions

The UK’s smallest country might be tiny in stature but it certainly packs a sightseeing punch. The local town of Stamford is known for its handsome Georgian architecture, while pretty Oakham (both 15 minutes’ drive) has a Norman castle as well as loads of stylish shops if you’re looking to offload some cash. If it’s picnic weather, journey to Melton Mowbray (25 minutes) to pick up a couple of the local pork pies to eat on your travels. For active adventures with the family, Rutland Water hosts inflatable and floating climbing courses at Aqua Park Rutland (15 minutes), dinghy sailing at Rutland Sailing Club and waterside golf at a nine-hole course (both 20 minutes). Trout fishing and birdwatching for teals, herons and rare ospreys are also possible around the reservoir’s shoreline. Have a wander up to the Iron Age fort at Burrough Hill (half an hour) for far-reaching views across Rutland, and in summer, take a guided tour of ornate Burghley House (20 minutes), an impressive Tudor-era mansion with Capability Brown-designed gardens. If you have young kids with you, give them a break from culture by treating them to gentle rollercoasters and falconry displays at Twinlakes Park (25 minutes).
