  • Tipi and paddling experience in a rural location by the River Thames
  • Harcourt Arboretum 10 minutes' drive; Oxford 20 minutes
  • Paddleboarding/canoeing included; three pubs within five minutes' walk
Set in an acre of garden meadow by the banks of the River Thames, Riverside Stay and Paddle makes an excellent place to book a south Oxfordshire break. This is a wildlife haven, with otters, deer and kingfishers all regularly passing through, while the peaceful village of Dorchester-on-Thames and its three pubs can be reached within five minutes' walk. Sounds pretty idyllic, doesn't it? And that's without even mentioning the site's stand-out feature – hire of up to two paddleboards or one Canadian canoe (plus lifejackets) is included in the price, and hire for additional paddling experiences can be arranged too if needed (extra charges apply). Once you've set off for the day, let the site team know where you're heading and when to meet you and they can arrange to pick you up free of charge (restrictions apply). If you'd rather stick around at base, you can fish here too – just buy an Environment Agency licence beforehand. The accommodation on offer here is made up of a single tipi with sole occupancy of the camping area. As well as a private stretch of river frontage and uninterrupted views of the nearby Wittenham Clumps, guests here can look forward to cooking in the outdoor kitchen, which includes a gas barbecue, utensils, ample outdoor seating and a firepit area. A composting toilet and electric shower are available (eco-friendly toiletries are included). Inside, the tent can be prepared with a kingsize or two single beds, plus up to two extra mattresses if needed. A logburning stove is available for those cooler nights, and all linen, towels and tableware are included.

From the manager: So busy picking up apples, clearing the garden and enjoying the autumn sun from the paddleboard, that I missed this. Thank you so much for your review. We are really glad you enjoyed your stay... such a peaceful time by the river!

Tipi

Liked: The area and the facilities are wonderful, you've got direct access to the river Thame in a range of boats to suit all abilities. The tent is very spacious, practically decked, and the mattresses were supremely comfortable. We had a very cold night (0 C) and found the stove inside the tent quite cozy. James and Louise are lovely and truly know and appreciate their environment, their advice on walks, river trips and how to make the most of the equipment was superb.

Disliked: Nothing. This was the first glamping trip we didn't find back breaking.

Local attractions

Dorchester-on-Thames is in an excellent position for walking, whether you're striking out along the Thames Path (a few hundred metres from site) or taking to the gorgeous green hills around the Wittenham Clumps (about half an hour's walk). The village itself has plenty to keep guests occupied, including three pubs, the historic Abbey and its tea rooms or alpaca walks at Bishop's Court Farm (all within a short walk). In the immediate surroundings, you also have Harcourt Arboretum (10 minutes' drive), the Pendon Model Railway Museum (10 minutes) or more watersports opportunities at Queenford Lakes (five minutes). For more cosmopolitan days out, you could peruse the world-class collections of Oxford's Ashmolean Museum, wander through the university's college quads or treat yourself to an afternoon of shopping at the Westgate Centre – all of it 20 minutes away by car (regular buses are also available).
