  • Peaceful rural site with panoramic views of the Chiltern Hills
  • On the Ridgeway Trail, less than 30 minutes from Oxford and Reading
  • Dog-friendly site; campfires permitted, with wood for sale
Disconnect from the world and plug in to nature at Ridgeway View Campsite, a spacious, back-to-basics site under 30 minutes by car from both Oxford and Reading. Generous pitches here are surrounded by Oxfordshire wheatfields with the Chiltern Hills beyond. This quiet site takes its name from the ancient trackway it backs onto. Now one of the UK’s popular National Trails, the Ridgeway 87-mile route is known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’ – walk here to follow in the footsteps of 5,000 years' worth of travellers. Less than a mile away, visitors can link up with the wildlife-rich Thames Path too. Also within walking distance (just far enough to build up an appetite for lunch) are several great pubs – plot your routes to take in the hostelries in Crowmarsh Gifford or Hailey. Something a bit more active in mind (or need to get some stress out)? Book a session at Ridgeway View's own axe-throwing range, which is a 15-minute drive away from the site. For stocking up on essentials, taking tea and cake or pottering around the shops, pop to the historic market town of Wallingford (five minutes’ drive), where you should also seek out the blue plaque for famed novelist Agatha Christie (British TV watchers may also recognise the area as the setting for Midsomer Murders). Half an hour’s drive to the north brings you to Oxford, and the same distance south is Reading. Guests have access to just a few back-to-basics facilities, including portable toilets, three cold-water showers and one gas-heated shower. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if raised off the ground – firewood is available to buy, and cooking slabs can be hired. Considerate dog owners are welcome, and there’s plenty of space nearby for the canines to stretch their legs. On the farm, there’s a no-noise policy at night past 10.30pm, so that everyone can enjoy a bit of rural peace.

What customers say

This no-frills spot boasts huge open areas, beautiful country views & direct access to the Ridgeway. Travellers rave about the peace, quiet & friendly staff. Facilities are basic but clean enough, with portaloos & cold showers. Great for a quiet, nature-focused escape, though it can be windy & the basic amenities might not be for everyone. Good base for exploring local towns & walks.

Rob C.

Unpowered grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Lovely location, easy to get to & right next to a walking path. Beautiful views all around. The manager was really friendly and checked in multiple times during the day. Walking distance to Wallingford town, which is on the Thames and well worth a visit in itself. Noon check-in was great. Great walking for those with a dog, loads of space on the field at this time of year.

Disliked Very open to the wind across the entire field - zero protection, saw a tent get partially blown away when I was there and I struggled with my T6 wind out awning deployed. I don't know how common that amount of wind is but depending on your camping setup it could be an issue, just be aware.

Absolute bare-bones facilities on the site, but to be entirely fair this is called out very clearly online when booking - it's just a fact that the toilets are a bank of portaloos, the showers are cold and there are cold water taps at various points around the field. Be aware and manage your expectations accordingly.

From the manager: Thanks Rob, glad you enjoyed your stay. Although the site is very open the winds this week have been unusually strong but this seems to be the case across the country. Hope to see you again :)

Liked Awesome site! Right by the Ridgeway, but also near lots of other nice walks, including the Chiltern Way and Thames path. We didn’t meet the owners, but they were really friendly and responsive over text. The site has flat ground, lots of space, toilets and running water, all in unspoilt countryside - what’s not to like?! We will be back!

DONNA F.

Unpowered grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Family of kites flying over farmland

Disliked Big scary dog running around camp field when I arrived, absolutely no one else on site. Big whie van, motorbike and gazebo set up, occupants out. Rang farmer to check-in as instructed, no answer but he did eventually call back. Told him about dog, he said he would find out who owned it. Pretty obvious who, as only 2 small abandoned tents and a row of porta loos. Farmer turned up later and then man & woman in van. Farmer did not come over to me and apologise, he just drove off. Couple caught dog, put lead on it and shut it in fabric cage type thing outside their van, but only after she had kicked it and bloke punched dog. They picked up all the rubbish the dog had got out of 4 or 5 bin bags (so they must have been on site for some time). They drove off straight away, left dog barking and howling. I was left in field on my own, not knowing what would happen next. I did not know the area, and I had an early start the next day...otherwise I would have left. The couple came back sometime in the night and I saw them (at a distance) at 7am, and then they drove off, leaving dog again. I packed up and left. DISGUSTING SITE FOR £20 PER NIGHT ONLY SH***Y PORTA LOOS. THIS SITE SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM PITCHUP...RIP OFF

Local attractions

On a summer’s evening, there’s nothing quite like messing about on the river – hire a boat nearby at Wallingford Bridge or Benson Waterfront (both five minutes' drive). Sipping a glass of wine comes a close second, so Brightwell Vineyard (10 minutes) could be a good shout too. For wildlife enthusiasts, Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve is 10 minutes away by car or a pleasant hour’s walk taking in the Thames Path along the river. And children (and quite possibly grownups) are bound to love a visit to Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes’ drive). To get the blood pumping, you could brave the local skydiving (five minutes) and watersports (15 minutes) centres.
