  • Deliberately rustic camping field on an Oxfordshire canalside pig farm
  • Farm shop with sausages, bacon, pork and eggs
  • Catering trailer on site serving breakfast and lunch
If you owned a narrowboat, could there be any more crack(l)ing pastime than pulling up to a farm shop on the historic Oxford Canal to pig out on all things pork? Don’t own a narrowboat just yet? Go the whole hog regardless at The Pig Place near Banbury: the range of pig-based products – and pigs – here might make you squeal. The Pig Place is a working smallholding and campsite next to the Oxford Canal, complete with farm shop stuffed with prime pig products such as traditional sausages, dry-cured bacon and home-produced pork, all from the farm’s rare pedigree breeds of British Lop and Oxford Sandy and Black pigs. Buy some along with a clutch of free-range eggs for breakfast, or trot along to the catering trailer for a breakfast or/and lunch of bacon and eggs, sausages, roast pork, stuffing and apple sauce, guaranteed to leave you more pot-bellied than when you arrive. The site received a premises licence in 2017 too, so can now sell alcohol for supping on or off site. Bring your camera to be on the tail of some smoking hot pics here: piglets regularly run around the site. The grassy camping paddock at The Pig Place sits beside the livestock area – hang about near your pitch at feeding time for more snaps, or turn your gaze waterwards for photos of narrowboats drawing in to stock up at the farm shop. Facilities at The Pig Place are basic (it has several portable toilets but no showers), but the owners rightly say the attractions on site more than make up for it: whether casting about at the canal (just adjacent to the farm), racing piglets around the site, or seeing just how many sausages it’s possible for you to feast upon, it's very unlikely you’ll be boar-ed...

Sow powered grass caravan site (four person)

Liked: Liked that it had its own shop, food stand and bar. Plenty of outdoor and indoor space for people to sit and chill. Grounds kept beautifully and great to watch the canal boats. Also have live music on. The pigs were very cute! Also it’s adults only.

Disliked: Toilets, they were portaloos and were in quite a bit of an unclean state while we were there. Could do with a dedicated toilet/shower block. No wifi.

Weaner unpowered grass tent site (four person)

Liked: Wonderful site, the pictures don’t do it justice. Highly recommend for campers, vans & boaters alike. Super friendly owners and staff and very cute pigs to give an ear scratch to. Breakfast offer very good and lovely shop with good offerings. Had a wonderful time, thanks so much all at the Pig Place, perhaps we’ll try to book a mooring next time and make it along from the staffs and Worcs.

Disliked: Nothing at all.

Sow powered grass caravan site (four person)

Liked: Fantastically quirky, very welcoming site where you can get an amazing breakfast every day of the week at the Trough and a drink or three at Trotters bar. Enjoyed the challenge of levelling the van in the ridge and furrow field but decided on ridge over furrow after losing the feet off the rear steadies trying to reverse into a dip - oops! Great location for canal watching/walking and getting away from it all with a bit of live music thrown in for good measure. Would definitely recommend.

Disliked: Not so keen on the constant motorway noise but it didn't stop us getting a good night's sleep. Bit pricey for a site with only festival style toilets and no showers etc

Gilt unpowered grass caravan site (four person)

Liked: Loved the atmosphere here. Little farm shop, great cafe for a coffee and breakfast, mushrooms were magic. Bar on site. Staff staff super friendly and couldn’t do enough fit you. The pigs was great to watch digging up the ground. The kettle by the sinks was a great thing as no hot water but it added to the quirky site. Loads of entertainment with a quiz and local bands playing. Would go back

Disliked: The porta loos even though they were clean and well stocked with loo roll they were a bit smelly come Sunday and in need of emptying as was getting full and some didn’t flush.

Liked: Relaxed site Staff all really helpful & friendly Shop, food wagon & bar Lovely site by canal

Disliked: Toilets - site was busy & they were quickly full & smelt. We have our own so not bad for us, but for people in tents it must have been pretty awful. No facility to enable people to even wash. I wouldn't recommend to anyone without their own sanitation.

Wild Boar unpowered grass caravan site (six person)

Liked: The Pig Place was amazing. Run by a friendly bunch of guys who ran the shop, bar and diner. The food was really nice, just burgers and chips, but tasty. The breakfasts were epic. The mushrooms were especially good. No need for lunch! We arrived on the quiz night. Don’t expect a serious quiz! There were lots of youngsters there, but no trouble or noise. Just a really nice, layer back place. We will definitely return. It was right on the edge of the canal and they provided wood burners and settees. The shop sold useful items.

Disliked: Portaloos. We didn’t use them as we had our own loo, so they may have been good, but still a portaloo

Gilt unpowered grass caravan site (four person)

Liked: Lovely site. Very well thought out. The piggies were great to watch and see their characters. Lovely walk along canal or just to sit and watch the boats going through the lock. Staff were very quiet and didn’t seem to interact with the campers. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing. Think we would’ve liked abit more interaction. If you are interested in the pigs ask to be placed next to the stys in order to watch them.

Disliked: Although we were self deficient as we were motorhome and never needed to use toilet or sink. The toilets were individual porta loos. But the sinks outside were where the tenters washed their pots, plus they were using them to wash in and clean teeth. Think a few changes to it would help.

Local attractions

The Oxford Canal is the oldest mainline canal in England and has walkies all along its 77-mile towpath (borrow one of The Pig Place dogs to escort you along the route), passing some of the most scenic spots and villages in Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. It’s mostly easy hoofing along the whole route with few hills: carve a slice into a day trip or afternoon amble. Pack a picnic (of bacon sarnies) and go to Banbury four miles away to tackle the modernised towpath walk from Banbury to Cropredy via the newly added glass bridge, waterworks gallery and museum spanning the canal along the way. A day at dramatic Stratford-upon-Avon should be on the cards in any hol – especially if the Royal Shakespeare Company are performing Ham-let…
