  • Lively family-friendly island site on the Thames
  • A 20-minute drive from hikes, bikes and sights of the Cotswolds
  • Easy stroll from traditional English pub-restaurant on the Thames
They say no man is an island – but a few nights’ stay on one might be just what you need to reset. If that sounds like something that’ll float your boat, row yourself over to Ye Olde Swan, a family-friendly site on a Thames island in the small Oxfordshire village of Radcot, five minutes’ drive from Faringdon market town. The site’s right across the river from the Ye Old Swan pub and restaurant, so planning those all-important food moments will be a cinch. For Cotswoldsy days (the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is 20 minutes away), order picnics from the restaurant the night before so snacks are covered on lengthy rambles and explores – otherwise keep it to lunch and dinner in-house or in the scenic riverside garden. At the weekends, there’s a pizza and prosecco bar for fancy outdoor eats. Grub isn’t all base camp is good for: there’s a peaceful bank for hours of fishing and easy access for paddleboards, kayaks and canoes (paddleboards and kayaks can be rented on site, so there’s no need to lug one along). The long-distance Thames Path runs through the camp so pulling on those walking boots for meandering wanders is a must. Do bear in mind the scenic island location though... There's plenty of fresh water, but pumping out waste isn't as easy – mentally prepare for using portable toilets on site, and there'll be no surprises on arrival.

Local attractions

TV addicts should make their first stop five minutes’ drive away in the market town of Bampton where they can roam the streets of Downton, then travel on to the spectacular Highclere Castle (50 minutes), which doubled as Downton Abbey in the TV series. Poldark fans are in the right spot too... they’ll recognise Chavenage House (a little under an hour away) as Trenwith. There are plenty of old piles nearby that never featured in a costume drama, but that are still well worth a visit: textile designer, poet and activist William Morris’s old house, Kelmscott Manor, is 10 minutes from base, Buscot Park is 15 minutes away, and Blenheim Palace, Broughton Castle, Chastleton House, Sezincote House and Sudeley Castle are all within an hour. For days out in the open, there’s loads to entice too: about an hour away, the national arboretum at Westonbirt and the Highgrove Royal Gardens at Charles’ and Camilla’s private country estate deserve a wander and, if camera fingers are itching, a trip to Castle Combe is a must for trad scenic Cotswold houses and winding streets. Budding zoologists should make the 15-minute trek to the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Garden – a must for exotic animals and for the UK’s largest reptile collection – and twitchers will be all aflutter at Birdland, half an hour away. Want something more high-octane? Get motors revving at the Gloucestershire Rally School, 30 minutes from base, or let things get a little ropey at Head for Heights.
