  • Luxury glamping site on an alpaca farm by the Midshires Way
  • A 25-minute drive from Nottingham; 45 minutes from Rutland Water
  • Adults-only site a mile from East Leake; pub 15 minutes' walk away
As the name suggests, Midshires Way Campsite and Alpaca Farm is right off the popular Midshires Way footpath, a long-distance trail that runs all the way from the Chiltern Hills up to Stockport at its northern end. And this splendid south Nottinghamshire location also delivers on the animal inhabitants advertised – they've got alpacas here, and what a fantastically fluffy bunch they are. You won't find any kids cooing over them, though, as this is an adults-only setup that thrives on rural peace and quiet. Dogs, however, are permitted on site, and treated to their own exercise area where they can run about and make new friends. Facilities for the humans include smart heated toilet and shower facilities, plus a laundry area. Of an evening, the barbecue area is the place to be in the evening for sipping drinks at sunset or cooking dinner over coals. If you’d rather someone else did the cooking or provided the pints, there are plenty of places to pick up meals and drinks in East Leake, a village less than a mile away from the farm. When not out roaming, guests might like to play golf, ride the local steam train, go fishing, try their luck at the races or get behind the wheel of a supercar – all opportunities that can be reached within a half-hour drive. There are plenty of footpaths and bridleways around too for walkers who don't fancy the long-distance effort.

Fully-serviced grass site

Liked: What a gem of a campsite. Immaculately clean and well kept site. On flight path to East Midlands Airport but flights going over were more fascinating than annoying. Plenty of wildlife around, alpacas and horses also in fields nearby to watch and be entertained by Lovely leaded walk for your dogs off the site and wonderful dog exercise field, which our two dogs loved, being able to run off lead round the field and passed the alpacas in the next field. We were on a grass service touring pitch for two weeks, but there were hardstanding service pitches if you preffered . There are chalets also on site. Two toilets and showers, very large, plenty of room..are unisex but no issue...spotless..Washing machine and tumble dryer available if needed. Elson point and rubbish point near reception as you enter..not far to walk,no issue...have walked further on other sites Shops etc within walking distance about 15mts away, or you can choose to go by car. Plenty of beautiful places to visit nearby or just sit and relax in or out of your caravan etc and take in the beautiful surroundings. Owners are lovely, there if you need them. We will definitely be returning...we had a wonderful relaxing holiday.

Disliked: Having to pack up and come home for sure.

Fully-serviced concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: Very nice and clean facilities. Serviced pitch very good and reasonably level. Lovely dog field where they can run to their hearts content. Alpacas were very interesting. Some lovely nearby walks and plenty of shops within a short drive. Be aware jets do fly over low but this was a bonus for me as a keen photographer.

Disliked: Only 2 toilets/showers and while they were immaculate there sometimes could be a short wait.

Fully-serviced concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: Fantastic small friendly site with Alpacas the main attraction for me. Only a 15-20 min walk into East Leake which has shops, pubs and restaurants plus a really good bus service to Loughborough and Nottingham so no need for a car. Check in was easy owner friendly. 2 toilet/showers always clean and tidy with pot wash and washing machines. Under the flight path for East Midlands airport which I thought was great to watch and not that intrusive - overall all good and cannot wait to return.

Local attractions

Close to base, you can ride the steam-powered Great Central Railway (15 minutes' drive); amble towards East Leake and watch the trains puffing through if you only fancy a glimpse. Other local activities of note include spots such as Rushcliffe Golf Course (five minutes), Lakeside Sporting fishing lakes (15 minutes) and Prestwold (10 minutes), where you can get behind the wheel of a turbo-charged car. Visit more motorsport spots, starting with nearby Donington Park Circuit (20 minutes), or try some old-school four-legged racing at Nottingham's racecourse instead. When the heat of the action's worn off, consider taking a trip to the John Taylor & Co bell foundry, the biggest such site in the world. If campanology doesn't quite chime in with your idea of a dream break, perhaps you'll be taken by alternative heritage sites like Calke Abbey (half an hour) or Belvoir Castle (40 minutes), where the architecture and formal gardens are as good as certain to pass muster with history buffs. Rutland Water (45 minutes) is another promising destination if you're minded to get up to walks, bike rides, birdspotting or watersports in a thoroughly natural setting.
