  • Tourer site 20 minutes’ drive from Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire
  • Lincoln and Retford 25 minutes’ drive; Sherwood Forest 35 minutes
  • Dog-friendly pitches; all-year coarse fishing; pub five minutes’ walk
Set in 27 acres of Nottinghamshire countryside 20 minutes’ drive from the market town of Newark-on-Trent, Marnham Lake Fishing and Camping is a laid-back stop for touring caravans, with spacious pitches on grass meadows sheltered by trees. Of course, the major pull here is the well-stocked, four-acre coarse fishing lake, where you can fish for roach, bream, tench and carp up to 16lb, but the non-fishing folk among you will still find plenty to keep you busy on site. Grab the chance to follow all the wildlife walks (great exercise for any canines holidaying with you), where you can keep an eye out for wild rabbits and take binoculars to spot birds of prey circling above. If you’re looking for on-site entertainment and a swimming pool, this is not the place for you. Simple on-field amenities stretch to a small toilet block and washing-up facilities, and the vibe is one of peace and calm. Should you want to live it large while staying here, there’s a pub in Marnham village (five minutes’ walk), and you can get your fill of bars and restaurants in buzzy Newark and Retford (25 minutes’ drive).

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Brilliant space, very friendly owners. Dog friendly! Good for short dog walk. Worth its price. If you like fishing, ideal spot.

Disliked: Maybe only criticism: toilet cubicles rather small and very low toilet

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Plenty of space. Quiet during the day. Friendly staff. Clean same-sex toilets.

Disliked: Site was hard to find; we had to phone for directions. Would suggest adding more directions on pitchup and/or adding to Google maps. There was some noise at night from a nearby factory which kept us awake. No bins. A bin for dog waste would be useful for this dog-friendly site. Only reason we don’t plan to return is due to the unpleasant smell that came and went a few times throughout our stay (we live in the countryside and don’t think it was manure) - perhaps a nearby septic tank or drainage issue? Otherwise would have been a 5 star from us.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Great location, spacious pitches, friendly and very welcoming, well looked after, simple but very clean facilities, close to an excellent pub (Brownlow Arms). Pretty much perfect...

Disliked: Only dislike, awful smell when the wind is in the wrong direction from a chicken processing plant. Can't blame the site but if I was either a business or resident around there I'd be complaining like mad to the Environments Agency. Only downside to the site.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Very quiet and well maintained area. Nice fishing lake with prepared pegs. No snags so comfort fishing. Pub within walking distance with food. Lots of place for walking and cycling.

Disliked: Just one toilet for men and women though there was little people so no problem at all. My wife tried showers and were ok. Overall basic amenities. Nice caretaker of the camping and lake.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Love this site. The staff are amazing and welcoming, this was my second visit and it felt I was visiting and old friend! On this trip we had a dabble in the fishing ponds, this made the trip even better. Was lovely to sit by the ponds and catch a few fish. The carp where teasing and showing themselves but no luck this time :(

Disliked: The only thing I disliked was having to come home

Unpowered grass site

Liked: We were dubious about going as the weather was hit and miss and a possibility of becoming bogged down in our mo ho but Mark the very friendly site warden reassured us that the ground was hard and not to worry. I’m glad we listened, what a lovely little site. There are plenty of fishing pegs which are well maintained (as is the rest of the site) Toilets and showers are adequate, don’t expect much but they are clean. There is a Fresh water tap and a place to empty waste with its own tap for rinsing. A small peaceful site which will now become one of our regulars.

Disliked: There wasn’t anything we disliked but if I was really picky I’d say the only thing that I didn’t like was the fact that there wasn’t any bins, but it wasn’t a problem to take it home with us. Although this could be a problem if we stayed a week. Other possible problems (in wet weather especially) are the narrow roads in that had no passing places which resulted in going onto a grass verge occasionally.
