Spectacular fishing with mighty scenic views... cast off at Nottinghamshire's Hallcroft Fishery and Holiday Park for angling in seven waters on a spacious and well-equipped park. Six lakes are at your fishing disposal here, along with yet more angling in the River Idle which runs alongside the site. You can land bream, eels, roach, tench, perch and varying types of carp at these, including at the huge Moat lake which is a regular venue for matches around its 190 pegs; if you fancy your hand at procuring pike, the river's the place to be. And if you need tackle, kit, bait or any angling advice, a shop for the same is right on site. Hallcroft is two and a half miles from East Retford, about 40 minutes' drive from Newark and half an hour from Sherwood Forest. You can stay solely on site should you so wish: the Kingfisher café and restaurant dishes up full English breakfasts, tea, coffee and toast to sort sustenance before a day's fishing; hot snacks are available some lunchtimes, and evening meals are on offer for after your angling. The restaurant is licensed, to serve boozy beverages during standard pub hours, and a pool table and darts board are to hand too. There are showers and toilets in the centre of the site, part of a good range of amenities including recycling, chemical disposal, a washing-up area and gas cylinder sales.

  • The campground/park caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.
  • The reception is open from 9am to 5pm Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday: outside of these days/times, your check-in details will be in a folder on the lectern near the reception door, if you need further help, please ask a member of staff at the fishing tackle shop, which is open daily.

This well-kept campsite gets props for its friendly staff, spick-and-span facilities, and roomy pitches. Great spot for fishing, walks, and bike rides, close to town. The bar and cafe are big hits. Some folks found pitches a bit close, toilets needed a scrub during peak times, and there was noise from other campers. Speed bumps and the odd fishing comp closure popped up too.

Liked I really liked the look of this site and booked for 14 - 16 Nov for a special Birthday.

Disliked Had to cancel last minute due to severe weather/driving conditions. Rang to explain the situation. I asked about a refund or alternative booking dates but due to short notice (require 1 week notice) the lady said she will have to check this.

Liked Location is nice, great if you like fishing and walking in the nature reserve.

Disliked Shower rooms were awful. Not been cleaned properly in months. Orange bacteria everywhere. Absolutely stank.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Last minute booking for the night (how we choose our sites when travelling as never know where we will end up) late arrival box with site map, we are self contained in our van but toilets/showers and washing up rooms we clean. Site warden popped by in the morning to check all ok, Great Lakes to walk round and clean and tidy. Will definitely stop over again if nearby, very dark site so torch is a must.

Liked The view across the lake. It was clean and tidy and quiet too.
The sweet smell in the air from the local popcorn factory.
Very quiet and small.
Friendly staff.

Disliked Gas boiler had broken so no hot water for washing or showers.
The entry was past a recycling centre at the back of an industrial estate , with lots of rubbish blowing around. However, the site's grounds were spotless.

After your angling, take the kids to Sundown Adventureland (20 minutes' drive), a theme and play park for under-10s with rides and attractions of all sorts including an intriguingly-named ostrich safari ride. (You may or may not opt to let the kids know a pet shop is at the park too...) For a calmer time, the National Trust and Grade I-listed Clumber Park is 25 minutes from Hallcroft, for peaceful potters around its 3,800 acres. It's the former home of the Duke of Newcastle, so ponder on how the other half live during your scenic strolls, or hire a bike to pedal around the woodland and lake. National Cycle Route 6 connects Clumber Park with fab Sherwood Forest, along a path of almost seven miles. If you'd prefer to stay closer to home, Hallcroft is next to the biking and hiking of the Idle Valley Nature Reserve, an excellent birdwatching spot.
