  • Simple site in the grounds of a 19th-century coaching inn
  • Lincolnshire Wolds walks and Skegness within half an hour's drive
  • Pub with food; a 10-minute walk from the Aviation Heritage Centre
Hikes, wildlife and generous helpings of history are all dished up at The Red Lion, a simple site in the grounds of an old Lincolnshire inn. At a crossroads in the village of East Kirkby, The Red Lion has been refreshing travellers since 1841; more recently, it was a favoured watering hole for the men and women of Bomber Command in World War II, and the pub’s décor pays tribute to them. The staff are steeped in the history of the old coaching inn and the nearby airfield, and can point you towards the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, 10 minutes’ walk down the road and on the site of the former Royal Air Force base. The Red Lion makes a splendid base for aviation and wartime history buffs, with the heritage centre nearby and the displays and memorials of the International Bomber Command Centre a 45-minute drive away. As it’s on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds and around half an hour's drive from the coast, it’s also well placed for walks, stately home visits and wildlife watching. Most importantly, it’s at the back of a friendly pub (which has varied winter and summer opening days and hours, but is always closed on Mondays). It serves hot food alongside local beers and other refreshing tipples. Canine companions are welcome in the bar (it’d be nice if they bought a drink…) and on the site.

What customers say

Well-kept, organised site with spacious, level spots & top WiFi. Friendly staff & a great pub with hearty tucker. Close to the Aviation Centre. Facilities a bit dated but clean & fine for most. Peaceful, great value, and super welcoming. Highly recommended.

3 bedroom static caravan (six person)

Liked Good location. Pub on site was friendly and great selection of food. Easy access to the site with clear instructions.

Disliked Disappointed with the caravan itself for a number of reasons. None of which have anything to do with the site itself, or the pub on site, as these were great.
The caravan we stayed in was dirty upon arrival, and freezing cold. There was a plug in heater which was making a noise that sounded like it was about to blow up! There were no towels available even though it was clearly stated that these were provided, so we had to go out and buy some. The cutlery was literally falling apart whenever it was used. The handles fall off whenever you use or wash them. The fire alarm was consistently going off (even when nothing was being cooked). One occasion was 4am, which woke the whole caravan including our 2 small children. The oven wasn’t fit for purpose, it just smoked when switched on and didn’t cook food. None of the doors in the caravan closed properly, they had to be slammed shut (but then subsequently wouldn’t open afterwards). Towards the end of our trip we had a power cut, to which we called the owner who said this would be sorted immediately. The power came back on, but we had zero communication with the owner or electrician after this. We later realised that the heating and hot water wasn’t working, but we couldn’t speak to anyone at this time because it was the middle of the night. We got up and left the next day in -1 degrees with 2 small children. When I spoke to the owner to let them know about this I was responded with “thanks for letting me know” - no apology or way of compensating us in any way. I have since tried to contact the owner 4 times to speak about our concerns, and I am getting no communication back. I wanted to discuss the trip so that we could resolve without a complaint, but I am now getting ignored. Would not recommend static 1 on this site. I would like to reiterate that this is no way a reflection on the site itself or the pub on site.

From the manager: Hi Thankyou for the review, as the site owner I can only appologies to your stay I’m afriad that we do not manage or maintain the Staitcs in anyway and all falls on the owner as was there choice, we are only contracted to advertise these units, the only thing I can say in response is I did come and see you after resetting the electrical trip which was found to be overload on part of Staitc 4 having to much on, I also returned your dog which I found roaming outside, on all other aspects and the lack of communication from the owner of the statics I can only apologies while obviously not my place to and these issues should have been addressed it is a shame as it then does not represent the site as a whole and pulls us down as the site owners instead which is not what we wanted as we work very hard to maintain the rest of the campsite extrmely well it’s just unfortunate that we don’t have anything to do with the statics, thanks again I will pass this to the owner you have my word thanks

Local attractions

With the chalk hills and sandstone peaks of the Wolds so close, walkers and cyclists are particularly well sorted. A 15-minute drive away, Horncastle is a handy point to join the Viking Way: 147 miles of country trails linking the banks of the Humber with the wetlands around Rutland Water. For a more detailed look at the Wolds, take the Lindsey Trail from Horncastle up to Market Rasen (45 minutes by car), a far-from-flat route of around 80 miles passing through a landscape of ancient woodlands, Neolithic long barrows and fenland views. If the sea’s more your style set course for Skegness, half an hour away, for pier and beach walks, sandcastle building and trips to the Natureland Seal Sanctuary. The same distance away but rather quieter, the Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve is a wild stretch of coastline crisscrossed with walks and bike trails, visited by skylarks and terns, brent geese and snow bunting. If you’re up for a stately home or two, you can’t get much more stately than the sturdy brick towers of 15th-century Tattershall Castle (15 minutes), while 18th-century Gunby Hall (20 minutes) is sometimes compared to a (very large) dolls’ house.
