Fishing lake

  • Quiet, secluded and rural site on 10 acres of fenland
  • One well-stocked fishing lake
  • Shop, bus stop and local pub all within a few minutes' stroll
Peaceful and with great fishing is how the folk at Ashleigh Lakes sum their pleasant place up – if you're after angling in a quiet and secluded countryside location, bag it here. Family run, Ashleigh is a small, secluded and level site between Peterborough, Spalding and Wisbech in the Lincolnshire Fens. It has one catch and release fishing lake within a minute or two's walk, stuffed with roach and rudd as well as mirror, common and ghost carp. You can fish all the day – and night – long if you wish, either with a day fishing ticket or a 24-hour one; just make sure to bring a valid licence or pick one up at the village post office when you arrive. Two rods are allowed per person. This is a wildlife haven too if your tastes tend more towards nature spotting, with foxes, hares, rabbits, deer and many bird species all roaming or fluttering about... or if you'd just like to amble about or sunbathe, the hedgerows keep the site nicely sheltered from the Fenland winds. Around the region, Ashleigh is 25 minutes' drive from Spalding and Peterborough, 30 from Wisbech and 45 from the biggest nature reserve in the country at The Wash. Amenities include washing-up, toilet and shower facilities all in the corner of the site, together with a chemical disposal point. The village post office is 50 metres from Ashleigh's entrance, as is the local bus stop – although if you ask nicely/are a tad fatigued after a Fens day hiking or cycling, the driver will often drop you off right outside.

What customers say

A peaceful, roomy campsite with top-notch, helpful staff like Colin. Enjoy the beautiful lake and abundant fish, plus tidy grounds. Facilities are basic but clean. A few nettle and pub noise niggles, but plenty will be back.

Powered grass tent, caravan or trailer tent site

Liked This site is surrounded by mature trees, with lots of space. It was only about 1/4 full, despite it being summer school holidays. So it was nice to have space. We weren’t on top of the other visitors.

The campsite was tidy. No litter in sight and you could tell it was well maintained and cared for.

No insects in the bathrooms (big bonus!) and an attractively styled bathroom too.

The toilet paper didn’t run out - it was well stocked.

There are many, many electric hook-up points. It’s very well equipped.

It’s a great campsite and overall we’d give it 8/10 stars.

Disliked To get to a 10/10 stars, it’s the little things that are need attention. E.g

*Clearing the stinging nettles around the plug points and water point.

* Deep cleaning the bathrooms so that the lime scale buildup and black mould on the grouting is gone and the holes in the wall are filled.

* There are only 2 toilets / showers. We rarely had to wait over this weekend, but the site was fairly empty. If the site was full I worry it wouldn’t be enough.

* Do be aware that there is a pub near by, that on summer Saturday evenings, does live music in the garden. It was great quality music and fun to listen to but it wasn’t the quiet country ambiance we had expected.

Unpowered grass tent, caravan or trailer tent site

Liked Being able to pitch the tentbox right at the fishing lake and having the whole lake to ourselves the whole weekend. Totally undisturbed and a well stocked lake !

Disliked Shower/toilet slightly rundown but functional and hot water.

Unpowered grass tent, caravan or trailer tent site

Liked Colin the manager was welcoming and friendly always had time for a chat.
Said if we go back again we don't have to book as he will fit us in which is useful to know.
The site was very clean and peaceful.
The grass was nice and short and no grass cuttings which was good as other places leave them and they get carried into the tent which isn't good when it's wet.
The facilities were very basic and for the price you can't comaplian.
There are two shower rooms both with a sink, toilet and a shower, then outside a washing up area, they could do with updating and maybe have more toilets and showers on site.
The walk to the fishing lakes were clean and loads of fish (.though we don't fish)
Also we saw two red kites flying about.
We will definitely stay on this site again.
There was also no hurry for us to leave and was told as long as we are off before the evening thats ok and to make sure our tent was dry before packing it away so it doesn't go mouldy or rot.

Local attractions

As it's the Fens, this is nicely level land around here, just the ticket for gentle walks and bike rides around the local area. As a first stop, amble or have a short pedal along to the Elizabethan Centre a third of a mile away, for bowls, badminton, a pool table or (and) nattering with locals over a cold pint. The local badminton team play most Mondays and Wednesdays and guests are most welcome to join in during their stay. By car, get along to Spalding for an extensive shopping session at the Springfield Shopping Outlet, followed by a wander and a rest around the Springfield Festival Gardens. Peterborough's well worth a day out too, for more shopping as well as strolls along the river, and Boston 40 minutes away is home to the 14th-century Boston Guildhall and a museum at the Maud Foster Tower Windmill.
