Calling all golfers – and those who are considering taking up the sport: Appletree Holiday Park is a peaceful site with a nine-hole course and a driving range where you can practise your swing until you feel comfortable for a challenge on the green. Appletree sits just off the A1121 road that leads into Boston (10 minutes’ drive); if you’re travelling by train, it’s a 10-minute walk from Hubberts Bridge station – either way, it’s easily accessible. And once you’re on site, you can leave the car behind, hire a bicycle and explore the local area on two wheels. Dog owners might want to take their four-legged companion for a stroll along the South Forty Foot Drain canal. It’s a walk of just over four miles to Boston, and once there you can reward yourself with a pint of ale – or a nice cup of tea, if you prefer. Alternatively, drive the 10 minutes to Westgate Wood, an area of woodland and wildflower meadows (however, you will have to keep your dog on a lead here to protect nesting birds). Those who are travelling with children might prefer to stay close to the site, which comes with an adventure playground featuring climbing structures and rope bridges, as well as a splash pad. The good news is that both areas can be supervised from the beer garden… The on-site restaurant serves a range of British classics (from a full English to steak and chips); if you’d rather cook your own meals, the nearest supermarket is on the outskirts of Boston, about three miles away.

Liked The camping pitch was nice and quiet. The splash park and play park where lovjdy for the kid. Restaurant wasn't sadly priced for food either.

Disliked The showers and toilets where disgusting when we arrived. The morning after when we went for showers then sewage water from the toilets was coming up through the shower plugs! It was reported to reception and cleaned a few hours later.

Disliked Bins were overflowing attracting rodents near the camping area

Little to do for families. Splash park and play area offers little entertainment. Not much else to do for children

Liked Staff were very friendly and nice to talk to. Splash pad and playgrounds were good fun, we spent hours there. We also used driving range and mini golf. Nice amount of other people using the splash pad, made for a good atmosphere.
Restaurant meal good quality, tasty and good value with kids meal offer.
Small campsite to start, but feels underused with only 4 other groups it was quiet when we arrived.
Toilet and shower clean and enough facilities for the amount of pitches.

Disliked 2 of the toilets ran out of soap and toilet roll on our first night, but still other facilities were available.

Liked Facilities at this park are excellent, theres a splash park for children and a big park, lots of choices for food, showers nice and hot and always clean.

The staff at this place are so lovely this alone would make me return.

Will certainly be returning.

Liked Good sized pitch, good value for money, area to wash dishes near to showers and toilets, play park for the children close to the bar, kids eat for £1 with each adult main, friendly atmosphere. Staff were helpful and courteous. Play park although looked imposing, was quite safe for our smaller kids.

Disliked Need more toilets and showers, maybe on the other side of the camping area. Water didn't stay hot in shower, not a secure site (no security checking) whole park was accessible to anyone. Possibly a barrier needed after main car park with passes given to staying guests. Water splash area only turned on when the weather got higher than 20°, so we only had one day where the kids could use it. Could have been useful to have a small shop on site to pick up emergency bits, milk, water etc.

Local attractions

The market town of Boston is known for the medieval church of St Botolph’s. Climb the 209 steps to the top of the bell tower for far-reaching views over the Fens, an area of marshes and wetlands that stretches all around the town. South of Boston is RSPB Frampton Marsh, where you might spot skylarks and avocets. A National Trust property, Tattershall Castle (20 minutes’ drive) dates back to the 15th century, and its elegant red-brick architecture is said to have been an influence on well-known structures such as Hampton Court Palace. Check out the massive fireplaces and ornate tapestries, or stroll around the grounds, which are home to geese and bats. A working military base, RAF Coningsby (20 minutes) was the headquarters of the renowned Dambusters squadron during World War II. These days, it’s possible to take a guided tour of the hangar, which displays Spitfires and Hurricanes among other vintage aircraft.
