  • Bell tents on a farm a 10-minute drive from Welwyn Garden City
  • Stevenage 20 minutes’ drive; Knebworth House 25 minutes
  • Highland cattle and horses on site, and free-range eggs for sale
A working farm populated by Highland cattle (and their irresistibly cute calves), chickens (generous suppliers of free-range eggs available for purchase at the honesty shop) and horses, Meadow View Glamping is a top spot for an off-grid holiday in rural Hertfordshire. But don’t let the peaceful vibe fool you: with Welwyn Garden City only a 10-minute drive away (and Stevenage 20 minutes), you’ll still be within easy reach of supermarkets, restaurants, cinemas and transport networks. In a peaceful corner of the farm, set well apart for privacy, are tastefully furnished bell tents with a real double bed, padded armchairs and storage. In addition to a shower and toilet, communal amenities include picnic tables and a sheltered outdoor kitchen area with a fridge, a kettle (and all the bits and bobs you need for a cuppa) and a washing-up sink. Barbecues are available if you fancy alfresco dining with a side of stargazing; otherwise, consider sampling the fare at the local pubs, of which there are two within a 15-minute walk (and several others within a five-minute drive). And if walking is your thing, good news: countryside trails start directly from the farm gate, taking you through the Mimram Valley and its wildflower meadows, shaded woodland and open farmland. You might spot red kites and painted lady butterflies at Tewin Orchard and Hopkyns Wood Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ walk), and Tewinbury Nature Reserve (five minutes’ drive) has bird hides from where you might spy kingfishers and warblers.

Local attractions

Stanborough Park Water Sports Centre (15 minutes’ drive) comprises two lakes: one for relaxed boating trips past gliding swans and ducks, the other for watersports like canoeing and paddleboarding. And if you happen to be there on a Sunday, see if you can bag yourself a bargain at the nearby car boot sale. National Trust - Shaw’s Corner (20 minutes) is an Edwardian villa that was home to George Bernard Shaw for over 40 years in the early 20th century. Inside the house, with its Arts and Crafts touches, are the Irish playwright’s piano, his tweed cape and his collection of hats, as well as a library and some original William Morris textiles. Originally a red-brick Tudor mansion, Knebworth House (25 minutes) now cuts a distinctive figure thanks to its extravagant Victorian-era turrets and gargoyles. Check out its lavish interiors, explore the formal gardens or the 250-acre deer park, and stay for an evening event, whether an open-air cinema screening or a live music concert.
