Liked: Great personal family friendly campsite. Showers were clean and the kids were allowed to help feeding of the animals in the morning. Very good playground for the kids to keep them entertained and the local pub was welcoming and offered a great selection of food and drinks. Mark was a fantastic host and nothing was any trouble. Using the eco toilets was a first but no issue. All in all it was a very enjoyable weekend and wouldn’t hesitate in booking again

2 bedroom shepherd's hut

Liked: A lovely quaint, quiet site. It was great the owners let the children in during feeding to meet the resident goats, rabbit and ducks. The site cat was also extremely friendly enjoying a lap snuggle with my morning coffee. Super friendly hosts and overall a great site for those camping.

Disliked: It was lucky that I had brought my own camp hob and camping chairs, as it didn’t have the bbq or the outside seating as it said on the listing. Thankfully as we were only using it as a base visiting family it didn’t affect us too much. I found a stone to make safe my hob and we made do. A longer stay on a proper holiday would’ve been awkward and wouldn’t have worked. The fridge listed is also a communal fridge, rather than at the hut. We also had to leave the doors half open on the huts overnight, my children are 10&11, so still sometimes need me in the night, but there was no way (that we could see) to accomplish this without leaving them top open. The top step up to the children’s hut was also very narrow (looked broken off) and my daughter took a tumble catching her foot down the gap.

From the manager: Hi....thank you so much for your review and we're pleased you enjoyed your stay...😄 The BBQs and chairs were in the storage shed, sadly we didn't realise you wanted them as I think you were here for a wedding? I hope you found the electric hob, microwave, kettle and toaster at the kitchen area by the stables....we try to make things as easy as possible for our guests, hence the kettle, cafetiere and picnic basket in the big hut. There's obviously in going maintenance involved with running a small site and the steps to the small hut, although safe are for repair/replacement next year. I hope you daughter was ok after her slip....I'd have put it in the injury at work register had I known. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay though and it would be lovely to see you again sometime.. Best wishes, Mark

Liked: A wonderful small and peaceful site in a lovely village. Mark is a great host and always on hand if needed. The pitches are very spacious with loads of space around and the field is very pretty. Facilities all immaculate. The Crown Pub is only 2 mins walk and we ate there twice - excellent food, drinks and service. We can’t wait to return.

Liked: We had a lovely couple of nights at Mark's place! A big draw for us was the prospect of helping to feed the goats, bunny, and ducks as well as making friends with the world famous Tismo the cat. We were not disappointed! My partner's ten year old daughter is animal mad and was in her absolute element. The site is charming, quiet, and well kept. Just a few mown pitches amongst longer grass - near enough to each other to be friendly, far enough to feel like your own space. Our pitch was generous in size, with a really useful picnic bench. We made friends with the other family staying, which led to lots of adventures for the kids around the site and nearby. One night we took our cricket set over the road to the village play area and by sundown the camping kids were at the heart of a big match that had attracted a fair few local kids to join the fun too. All very wholesome! The kitchen area and shower rooms were really handy and very clean. Lovely food and pints with a friendly welcome in the pub round the corner, too. The compost loos were a little bit daunting for the ten y.o. at first but she soon got the hang of it. For us, it was a really great base for canoeing a familiar corner of the Wye and for visiting Hay. The other family staying were enjoying touring the many castles in easy reach. A great stay. Thanks, Mark - hopefully see you again some time!

Liked: Efficient booking and contact with owner. Friendly welcome, very relaxed. Lovely mown pitches. Long grass between pitches for a more natural feel. Plenty of space and privacy. Helpful amenities if needed, fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle, hot plate, washing up station. Easy to use, well organised and clean eco loo. Clean spacious shower rooms x 2. Gorgeous cat. Traditional no frills pub within 5 mins walk where we had a very enjoyable meal. Will definitely return.

Liked: What an absolutely amazing little campsite. Simple, little mown grass pitches. Nicely spaced, but we were super lucky as the only occupants. Fabulous welcome from Mark, who also helped my little grandson with the early morning animal feeds. Super clean composting toilet and shower facilities. Kitchen area with kettle , microwave and toaster, is a great addition(complete with washing up area). I've got my own facilities in the van, but who doesn't love a microwave! The playground over the road is great for small children, and the village pub looked worth a visit. Maybe next time....and there will definitely be a next time! We couldn't possibly not come back to see the cat. Tizmo, we loved having you in our van overnight!

Liked: Perfect few days' camping, beautifully maintained site with spacious pitches, idyllic setting with views of the church and village, plenty of useful facilities e.g. clean shower and toilet, use of a kettle and microwave if needed. Best of all was Tismo the cat who came round to see us several times a day, and all the other lovely animals who live there. Looking forward to going back later in the year.

Local attractions

If a jaunt along the cider route isn’t your thing, perhaps you’ll be more taken with a day out on the Black and White Trail, which makes its way between several pretty and historic villages (with the area’s famed black-and-white houses, hence the name…) including little Dilwyn. For rather grander properties on a tour through the countryside, make tracks to Hampton Court Castle, Berrington Hall and Croft Castle, all of which are within a 20-minute drive. There’s a fine old Norman castle in Ludlow (half an hour) too, along with lots of excellent food shops; for a book to read while you sort through your finds, head to the bookshop mecca of Hay-on-Wye (25 minutes). The biggest city around these parts is Hereford, 25 minutes away (and with a bus connection from Dilwyn running a few days a week). Head over here to see the world’s largest surviving medieval map (the Mappa Mundi, displayed at the cathedral), visit the Black and White Museum or take a break from all the history by hiring canoes to paddle down the River Wye.
