The local village of Stoke Lacy (five minutes’ drive) and its church with Norman origins are surrounded by scenic Herefordshire countryside, with plenty to explore nearby. Bromyard (also five minutes) is a small market town where you can spend a morning browsing independent shops, a handful of decent pubs or the Thursday market selling plants and local produce. An open expanse of common land for walking and cycling, Bromyard Downs (10 minutes) is also good for birdwatching – take binoculars to spot red kites, buzzards and woodpeckers in the open skies. Of course, the spectacular Malvern Hills National Landscape (15 minutes) is also close by for more serious hiking and mountain biking adventures. If you fancy soaking up a bit of local culture, you can have a look around the interior of National Trust-run Brockhampton (10 minutes), a half-timbered and moated medieval manor house with acres of orchards and woodland to explore. Part folly and part sculpture trail, Ralph Court Gardens (also 10 minutes) are worth a visit for their madcap themed areas – and when you’re done with heritage stuff, head for the Wye Valley Brewery (five minutes) for tours of its brewing rooms and tastings of the end product.
