  • Peaceful pop-up farm site on the Severn riverbanks in Gloucestershire
  • A 20-minute drive to the Forest of Dean; 30 minutes to Symonds Yat
  • Dogs welcome; farm animals to meet on site
With minimal facilities but an absolute corker of a location slap-bang next to the Severn river, Severn Banks Camping (the name says it all really) has spectacular views over the estuary. It’s just the spot for some truly wild camping in gorgeous Gloucestershire countryside. As this is a basic site only, water and toilets are provided but there are no shower facilities. You’re pretty much left to your own devices, so feel free to turn up and bag your own riverside pitch, and bring along suitcase generators if you want to be powered up (barbecues are allowed too). And there are only a handful of pitches, so you’re never going to feel crowded out – and there will be some welcome neighbours in the form of the owner’s friendly donkeys, sheep and horse – and talking of animals, your dogs are welcome but please keep them under control because of the livestock. Direct from site, you can join the miles of public footpaths following the course of the Severn and if you run out of supplies, it’s a stroll across fields to Blakeney (40 minutes’ walk) to top up on basics at the convenience store.

Local attractions

If the kids are on board for the trip, let them burn off some energy on zipwires and treetop rope courses at Go Ape Forest of Dean (20 minutes’ drive), and get up close to exotic creepy crawlies at Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (35 minutes). If it’s shaping up to be a warm day, pack a picnic to eat on a vintage steam train along Perrygrove Railway (25 minutes). To become as one with nature, take a canoe safari around the wetlands at WWT Slimbridge (50 minutes) to spot ducks, geese and flamingoes, or follow the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail (20 minutes) to see installations featuring deer, dolphins and goblins (oh, and keep your eyes peeled – you just might see a wild boar snuffling around). And you’re close to all the rural charms of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (30 minutes), with riverside walks leading to Symonds Yat (30 minutes) viewpoint on the river. If you’d like to ramp up activity levels, the adrenaline will soon get buzzing with rock-climbing adventures, abseiling or even a bit of gorge scrambling.

Liked: Gorgeous location, easy to find, really helpful and friendly owners/staff who gave us the option how we wanted to pay which was a huge help. So peaceful! Felt private and safe the whole stay too. Toilets were well stocked with toilet-roll and sanitiser, water tap was easy to find too! Already planning our return :)

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: This site has a splendid c.180 degree view of the Cotswold Ridge and Severn Estuary from what is probably the Painswick area to Second Severn Crossing (both bridges clearly visible). We watched the Severn Bore three times during our two night (Sunday and Monday) stay. The field was quiet and unspoiled and we ate meals on the river bank watching the tides. Bordering the Severn Way long distance path, this is a good place for walks.

Disliked: The drinking water tap would benefit from a sign.
