  • Low-impact, nearly wild woodland site on the banks of the River Severn
  • A 20-minute drive from the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley
  • Exclusive use of five acres of dog-friendly wood and field
With five acres of woods by the banks of the Severn estuary, the only beings you’ll share Swallow Barn Campsite with are badgers and a barn bowl. Booking gets you exclusive use of this off-grid,semi-wild site and the surrounding woodland and field. Being only 20 minutes’ drive away from the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley is just the cherry on top. This is a low-impact site, with composting toilets, a bucket shower and a firepit. Swallow Barn is a smallholding that the owners farm according to organic and regenerative principles, and handily, they can supply guests with seasonal vegetables from their garden and eggs from their flock of Cuckoo Marans hens. The site accommodates up to 20 people, either on tent pitches or in a campervan parking area. There is a covered camp kitchen, with running cold water and a large table and benches. Toilets are composting. You’re also welcome to light a fire, but you’ll have to collect your own firewood (that’s the entertaining bit, right?). The Swallow Barn wood lies along a deep, lush valley, with a stream where kids can set about building dams. There’s a rope swing, which soars over the drop, and you’re also welcome to collect as much wood as you can carry for your fire. History fans might like the fact that the hamlet of Gatcombe at the foot of the woods was once a lively ship-building port and Francis Drake (an English naval officer) is reputed to have hidden there for a number of years. When it comes to public transport, there’s a bus stop at the turning off the main road and Lydney railway station is 10 minutes’ drive away. The site can provide a free taxi service to and from both the bus stop and the railway station for car-free bookings. For those with cars, Etloe is 35 minutes’ drive from the M5, half an hour from the M4, 45 minutes from Bristol and an hour and 35 minutes from Birmingham.
