  • Dog-friendly site at the top of Winnats Pass in the Peak District
  • 35 minutes’ drive from Chatsworth House; walk to Mam Tor and caves
  • Farmhouse sells essentials; off-ground firepits and barbecues allowed
Got the travel bug for country walks, caverns and granite tors? Rowter Farm Campsite might be the place for you. This site belongs to a working hill farm in a peaceful plot of land at the top of Winnats Pass in Castleton, so caves and country walks are practically in its backyard (within walking distance, Mam Tor and multiple caverns are open for exploration). Castleton village, five minutes’ drive away, has all the flavour of a classic Peak District village, including Peveril Castle, gift shops and pubs. For more local flavour, the site’s farmhouse sells essentials including eggs and milk. Whenever you want to warm the milk for breakfast or fry a couple of eggs sunny side up, firepits and barbecues are allowed (only if they're raised off-ground, though). Mountain biking and walking are all ways to conquer your new territory and handily, Rowter Farm Campsite is central to some pretty terrains, including Edale (15 minutes’ drive away) and the start of the Pennine Way, with other walks including the Kinder Scout and Jacob’s Ladder as extra spouts. As well as the handsome views up towards Mam Tor on site, the two-acre field has plenty of space for your family’s game of choice. Well-behaved dogs are welcome here and there’s strictly no noise after 10pm for everyone to get in their sleep. Please note that visitors are not allowed on site. Clean and basic sums up the facilities here, which include male and female toilets, showers (it’s one pound for a three-minute shower), dishwashing facilities, a fridge-freezer and plug sockets for charging phones or drying hair.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Castleton was a lovely area

Disliked: We didn’t realise that the camp site allowed large groups of lads. Due to this we had to listen to loud music and their drunken behaviour until nearly two o clock in the morning We would never return back to this site again

Liked: Excellent location with fantastic views! Good field although a little soggy - it had rained a lot!

Disliked: There were 2 x large DOE groups and a large mature group staying so the site was quite noisy and busy - would have been better if they had limited group numbers. This meant the facilities weren’t the best (no fault of the owners, just so many people they couldn’t keep up to the needs such as toilet paper!)

Liked: The location of this campsite was fantastic. Mam tor is a very short walk away, as are the Caverns (Blue John, Treak Cliff etc). Castleton is around 30-45 minute walk and is beautiful. It's a small town but has all the basics and lots of pubs. Chapel-en-Frith is a short drive away too so good if you need supermarkets (Aldi and Morrisons). The field did very well despite a pretty wet week. The car didn't get stuck once and no wellies were needed. The facilities are basic but that was what we wanted. There's a shower (separate men and womens), toilets (also separate men and womens), washing up area, fridge/freezer and a plug to charge phones. There is nowhere to lock up your phone whilst charging it but we left our phones several times and felt safe doing it. The showers require a £1 coin and last for 3 minutes. They are good showers with high water pressure and very warm. There is a basic shop at the farmhouse which sells normal bits and pieces like fire wood, kindling, marshmallows, crisps, milk and eggs etc. They are cash only. There was a jacket potato van which I believe usually opens on the weekend. We missed it this weekend so I can't comment too much more on this. Owners are friendly. As it is a working farm it can be a bit difficult to get hold of them at times, but most of the time we didn’t have to wait long if we needed to speak to them.

Disliked: Our only complaint was noise. Unfortunately I didn't heed the warnings from other reviews about noise and hoped that they had just been unlucky. We struggled to sleep on about 4 out of 6 nights because of noisy campers. There is a no noise after 10pm rule but this is not enforced. The noise was all because of groups of young adult lads who were staying for a night. They would blare music and shout to eachother, into the early hours. We asked most of them to quiet down but unfortunately this would usually not last. Unfortunately it seemed a few of them were going out of there way to be obnoxious and seemed to find it funny that we had asked them to be quiet. By the end of our stay we were pretty exhausted from lack of sleep, and were quite grateful for nights where is was rainy or windy enough to drown out noise. The noise is the reason that I would not stay here again, which is unfortunate because the stay was otherwise pleasant and, as I have mentioned, the location was fantastic. There were also 3 large Duke of Edinburgh groups during our 6 day stay. They were well behaved though and teachers did a good job of keeping them quiet after 10pm. Also the skip bin was overflowing. This did seem to be mostly because of other patrons failing to open the bin properly to put stuff in the back, and we did see the owners having to push things back themselves. I would have liked to be able to recycle some items but as there was only a general waste bin (plus a food bin in the kitchen) it all had to go in there.

Liked: Great location. Peaceful area. Friendly staff

Disliked: We wanted to purchase eggs and fire logs, however it was cash payment only. Would be great if card payment was an option 🙂

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Easy to find at the top of Winnats Pass to the left. Really nice ground to pitch the tent and 20 min walk from start of Mam Tor circular walk. Liked that there were clean toilets and not porter loos and on an eve looked like was a van for food we arrived just after though. Will 100% use this campsite again. Also 12pm was a good time to leave by as a lot are early morning checkout. We stayed for 2 nights and enjoyed waking up surrounded by sheep.

Disliked: Nothing. Though I think if the food van was open early morning they’d make money on bacon sandwiches and tea/ coffees I’d have bought them anyway.

Local attractions

Fancy yourself as a lord or lady of the manor? The stately home and estate at Chatsworth House (35 minutes) might be the closest you’ll get. With a 105-acre garden, trout stream and nine rooms with painted ceilings, picnics are quite grand here, as is the scenery for your afternoon stroll or kitchen tour. You’ll certainly feel above everyone else, in the literal sense of the phrase, at Bamford Edge (20 minutes). There’s an uphill hike to this lookout over Ladybower Reservoir… pretty much primed for a photo opportunity, right? Further north, Derwent Reservoir (half an hour) has a fabric of walking and cycling routes plus fishing spots along the water, with bicycle hire available for those of you who don’t have your own pair of wheels. But what about the underground? Well, before you go down under into Castleton’s caverns, you’ll want to conquer Mam Tor (20 minutes' walk) first. It’s in the same area as the Blue John Cavern (25 minutes' walk/five minutes' drive), Speedwell Cavern (35 minutes' walk/five minutes' drive) and Treak Cliff Cavern (55 minutes' walk/10 minutes' drive), where there's everything from an 18th-century lead mine to musical events and rope-making works.
