  • Secluded site in Derbyshire, 25 minutesā€™ drive from the Peak District
  • Etherow Country Park 15 minutesā€™ drive; Manchester 40 minutes
  • Barbecues and firepits; resident pygmy goats and an apiary
On the edge of Peak District National Park (25 minutesā€™ drive), peaceful, secluded Elizabeth Cottage Camping sits between the river Etherow and the village of Charlesworth (five minutes), in the Derbyshire hills. The site occupies a large field that backs on to ancient woodland dotted with colourful wildflowers. This is a site where you can reconnect with nature and get up close and personal with varied wildlife. The pond is abuzz with dragonflies and damselflies, plus toads, frogs and newts. Mallards, herons and kingfishers can also be seen by the water, while if you look up to the skies you might spot birds of prey like buzzards, sparrowhawks and tawny owls. If you have a licence, thereā€™s angling at Etherow Country Park (15 minutes) and fly fishing at Arnfield Reservoir (15 minutes), while riding lessons at Hargate Hill Equestrian Centre (five minutes) or splashing around the Hyde Leisure Pool (20 minutes) ought to keep the kids entertained. Guests can pet the resident pygmy goats and horses, and pay a visit to the ownersā€™ apiary, which houses thousands of native honeybees. Barbecues are allowed, and the site owners will throw in a bag of wood to light the firepit on chilly nights. Thereā€™s a washing-up area, a gas shower and a couple of composting toilets on site, plus recycling facilities. When itā€™s time to stock up on provisions, a 20-minute walk takes you into Charlesworth, which also has a couple of traditional pubs. Local produce is also available at Lymefield Garden Centre (five minutes).

Liked: Amazing location, amazing couple. Couldnā€™t ask for anything more the owners went above and beyond to make sure my stay was perfect, they were lovely and friendly and really made me feel comfortable and at home. The animals are great and the Pygmy goats are hilarious, the facilities were spotless and better than Iā€™ve had from most campsites, all for a very reasonable price. The place is very peaceful so donā€™t come here to party, if you play music just keep it to a reasonable level and be considerate of your camping neighbours and the animals. If I donā€™t get to stay here again I would be disappointed, it was a truly wholesome and enjoyable experience.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: The best thing was the welcome from Neil and Aisa, really lovely couple. The campsite is really nice, a field next to woodland, with some really cool features like the gas powered shower, a beautiful lake and communal fire areas. We recommend The Hunter's Inn a short walk away :-)

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Everything, setting, the animals and birds to meet, the nicest composting loos ever in a tiny house (even had gingham curtains) none smelly, plenty of water taps, showers, pond and woodland walks, seating to enjoy the peace, fabulous hosts who regularly cleaned and checked site. Optional fire pits and wood etc for your very own campfire- they just couldnā€™t do enough - you felt like really honoured guests. They donā€™t take too many guests allowing plenty of space for peace and quiet too.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: We've just returned from a couple of days stay at Elizabeth cottage camping and we've had the best time ever. My daughter loved exploring the wooded areas looking for different wildlife and blackberry picking. On site she made lots of new friends during our stay and they had fun making memories on the swing, petting the farm animals and exploring the site. Aisha and Neil are fantastic hosts. We will definitely be coming again. Thankyou

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Aisa and her family were so lovely, friendly and helpful. A well thought out site, with firepits for hire along with logs and disposable BBQs. There are menus to local eateries, pubs and takeawayas available. Toilets are kept clean and regularly emptied. The site has a lovely walk from it through Woodlands. They also have 3 adorable pygmy goats, a pond and apiary to wonder round. A good location for visiting surrounding areas, easy to get to and only 25 minutes into the peak district. Would highly recommend this site, even just for the community feel you get there! Would definitely visit again ā™”

Bell tent (deluxe, two person)

Liked: We stayed in the bell tent for 2 people and cannot fault it. The owners are lovely, always up for a chat and go out of their way to make sure everything is ok. The effort put into the little touches is amazing. I am a planner and usually bring all that I need on a trip, but the tent had little extras that I never even considered! You donā€™t need to bring anything at all apart from clothes/food as everything you could need is provided. Hot shower was great and despite a malfunction, it was repaired super quickly and a back up was available. Would recommend to anyone and would definitely stay again!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: such an amazing place, very peaceful and calm atmosphere Owners are really nice and welcoming, owners were also helpful when our tent was leaking Just as a warning the animals roam free (goats, geese, hen and cockerel) also their family dog! we really enjoyed our time and the other campers were nice too! we have booked to come back in a few weeks :) We had no problems with data connection for anyone who may be worrying about this Also we loved the fact on the day we were leaving a family had arrived with their children (around 5-8years old ) and one of the owners took them for a trip in the trailer on the quad, the kids loved it and we loved hearing how much the children enjoyed!

Disliked: Facilities are a hit and miss depending on yourself, we had no problems, the toilet is quite literally a bucket BUT it is cleaned very regularly and we had no problems hygiene wise, also toiletries were stocked up at all times

Local attractions

Within a 20-minute drive of the site are two recreational areas for leisurely walks: Cheetham Park and Stalybridge Country Park. The former has two childrenā€™s playgrounds and a sculpture trail with timber animals. Stalybridge is somewhat wilder, with areas of woodland and moorland that provide shelter for hawks and other birds. National Trust - Lyme (30 minutes) ought to appeal to fans of Colin Firth, who can see the lake from which the actor emerged (as Darcy) in the TV adaptation of ā€˜Pride and Prejudiceā€™. The expansive grounds of this period mansion also include a rose garden, an orangery and a deer park. With two top-tier football teams, Manchester (40 minutes) is a dream destination for enthusiasts of the beautiful game, who can take tours of both Old Trafford and Etihad stadiums. To learn more about the cityā€™s role in the Industrial Revolution and beyond, check out the Science and Industry Museum.
