  • Glamping site five mins' drive from Peak District National Park
  • Quiet and secluded spot with views over Derbyshire countryside
  • Paradise for ramblers, bikers and petrolheads
Get ready to fulfil your Jane Austen dreams at Ernest’s Retreat, a family-run site on a working farm 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, Central England. Pride and Prejudice fans may know that being this close to the Peak District means you’re within easy reach of tons of stately homes: the spectacular Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall are all within 25 minutes of Ernest’s. The site is also in a prime spot for getting back to nature. The site is five minutes from the edge of the Peak District National Park, where there are plenty of trails to follow and loads of walking tours to join. If you’re more of a petrolhead than a rambler, you can tour the Peak District in something a little more your style: a 1929 Model A Ford Phaeton, run by Vintage Adventure Tours. Relax back on site by filling your eyes with views over the Derbyshire countryside before filling your stomach by firing up the barbecue – pile it high with supplies from one of the shops 10 minutes away. Need a break from cooking? Head to Chesterfield to grab a table at one of the restaurants, or try one of the nearby bar-restaurants.

Camping cabin

Liked: Nice site that still feels peaceful even when busy. The showers/toilet blocks kept clean there’s even an accessible/family bathroom. On arrival staff are really friendly and update you with things that are going on on the site ie visiting food trucks. The view from pod was lovely and on a clear night you can see stars for miles. There are loads of local walks if that’s your thing and I would definitely recommend visiting the heights of Abraham, which is only around 15 minutes away. We went on a rainy day and still had a brilliant time! Only a short drive away from supermarkets also Which is handy. Reasonable sized field for kids to play and let off steam. Everyone seemed to stick to the 10:30 quiet time ☺️

Glamper camping pod

Liked: Ernests retreat is a fantastic place for children. The space in the pod is great so lots of space to set up games and colouring if the weather is miserable. There's also lots of grassed areas where children can play. Having a wood fired pizza oven there on select days is a brilliant added bonus. A really family friendly campsite!

Rambler camping pod

Liked: Very easy to book with Pitchup. We have visited this site a few times now and always enjoy our stays here. The pods are clean and just about right for a short stay in the countryside. Our dog seems to enjoy it just as much as we do! The owners are lovely people and always willing to help with ideas for visiting the locality. We'll be back again for sure!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike at all.

Glamper camping pod

Liked: This place is beautiful. The view is simply stunning. It is a small site so very peaceful We stayed in the 5 person Glamping Pod. These things are insulated well - we barely heard any noise outside. Even with the small window open. This does also mean the pod stays very toasty warm - for me this was lovely as I love warmth but my partner found it far too hot so we kept the door open for the evening to cool it down until we turned in for night. The double doors work a treat for cooling it down. The single bunk bed and bed above double fit our children wonderfully. They are 4ft2, 4ft8 and 5ft1. The children slept in sleeping bags we brought ourselves, with room to spare. The double bed fit both myself and partner snuggly but we both slept well. The bed was quite comfortable - however you do need to bring own bedding. (For this we do this anyway as we prefer our own) There is a freezer onsite with a honesty box to purchase icecreams (£1.20 at time of our stay). We did not use but felt this was a wonderful idea. The facilities (showers, toilets, pot wash area) were very well kept. The man who came to check us in came very quickly once we called the number on the check in desk. The man, Peter, was lovely and informative did not miss any information out that we may have needed. Inside the pod there is a kettle, hot drinks sachets provided including biscuits. There is also a small raidiator provided if needed. There are 4 plug sockets in the pod. We were expecting only 2 so this was lovely surprise. I did not check for WiFi. We have enough data we used mobile hot-spot. ID mobile network coverage was great.

Local attractions

Exploration of the Peak District doesn’t have to mean pulling on those walking boots, slapping on a helmet or doing your best Toad of Toad Hall impressions in a classic car – you can also have an altogether more sedate experience, with fishing and golf five minutes from Ernest’s Retreat or a saunter around the banks of Ladybower Reservoir, 40 minutes away. If you’ve already put the splendour of Chatsworth, Haddon and Hardwick stately manors on your list, now add the 25-minute trip to Bolsover Castle, a fortified retreat with a reputation for revelry. Tread lightly, though – they say it’s haunted, and you don’t want to anger anything lying dormant… If the kids haven’t hit those Jane Austen literary peaks yet, they may need something more than Pride and Prejudice vibes to keep them entertained. Luckily, the kid-friendly Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park is only 15 minutes away and the entire family can head to Alton Towers, just under an hour from Ernest’s, for an adrenaline spike.
