Views across peak district national park

  • Peaceful family-friendly spot in the Peak District National Park
  • Hiking, rock climbing, potholing and caving within 30 minutes
  • A 45-minute drive from the rides and rollercoasters at Alton Towers
Stunning countryside, spectacular views and a whole lot of get-up-and-go… If that ticks everything off your getaway bucket list, make tracks for Newhaven Holiday Park, a family-friendly site in the tiny hamlet of Newhaven 20 minutes’ drive from Derbyshire's Buxton. Inside the Peak District National Park, Newhaven is a top spot for energetic types: the High Peak trail passes less than a mile from the site, and you can pick up the Tissington Trail at nearby Hartington Station (or start from Ashbourne, 20 minutes away, to do the whole thing). If you’re of an even more active persuasion – with a daredevil streak perhaps – there’s rock climbing, potholing and caving half an hour away in the High Peak area of the park. You don’t have to go clambering over hills and dales to get a good look at the Peak District though: this site is in a secluded spot, with views over the countryside and plenty of trees and shrubs for shelter. Kick back and relax among all the greenery while the kids run riot in the playground. Ready for something to munch? For anything more substantial, pull a chair up to the table at one of the many restaurants within 20 minutes of Newhaven.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: My Daughter loved the playground and I liked the shower block and the neighbours. I was grateful to the friendly staff who helped me pitch up as I tried to peg out and bent all my pegs but they helped me move and helped me peg out in a different place.

Disliked: The noise from the main road, I'm a heavy sleeper but it was noisy even for me, I found even at 2am there were a few trucks still driving down the road. Oh and the ground itself, if your pegging out a tent, you're going to need heavy duty pegs as I bent all of mine.

Liked: Well kept park which was quite well lit. Most of the toilet and shower facilities were great. Dishwashing facilities were very good. Nice children's play area. Friendly staff.

Disliked: Shower didn't last long per button press. 1 of the playground equipment didn't work properly.

Liked: The site was lovely. There were lots of toilet and shower cubicles in the ladies. On site shop. Lady on reception very pleasant, friendly and helpful.

Disliked: The ladies ran out of toilet paper in one of the cubicles, but it was replaced the following morning. There was only hand soap in two of the dispensers (out of four) when we arrived, those two ran out by our second day and they were not topped up before we left 😕 The shop did not take cash. Our (tent) pitch was a bit unlevel.

Liked: The park was good, my 10 yr old loved playing on it every night. Good facilities- not quite as clean as last time we stayed but ok. Reception great, very helpful. Good location, 15 minutes from Bakewell which is beautiful. Same distance to Buxton.

Disliked: Payed for Wi-Fi but we still didn’t get signal on our pitch.

Local attractions

This is Austen country, so you can barely turn around without tripping over some stately pile of bricks... If you fancy gliding around as if you own the place, adopt an air of wealth and superiority and head to Kedleston Hall, Sudbury Hall (with its Museum of Childhood), Hardwick Hall, Chatsworth House and The Old Manor, all within roughly half an hour’s drive of Newhaven, then chauffeur yourself over to Melbourne Hall, just under an hour away. Hols with kids are pretty easy in these parts too, as there’s absolutely oodles to distract them with within an hour of the site: make your way to Matlock for the Heights of Abraham alpine cable car and Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park (and the Crich Tramway Museum, Peak District Mining Museum and Masson Mills for some grownup sanity). Also get along to Buxton for treetop adventuring at Go Ape; underground exploration at Poole’s Cavern, and Alton Towers for some adrenaline-fuelled rides. If traipsing around on land isn’t really floating your boat, spend a day (or two) at Carsington Water, less than half an hour away, for sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, powerboating and fishing, or head to WaterWorld (just outside Stoke-on-Trent) for some indoor waterpark splashing around.
