  • Well-maintained and peaceful wild camping site in the Peak District
  • Buxton 15 minutes’ drive; Chatsworth House half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; village five minutes' drive away with pub and shop
Just how remote would you like your holiday accommodation to be? If the answer is fair to middling, Damside Campsite might just be the place for you: this pop-up spot is surrounded by the glorious wilderness of Peak District National Park. Doesn’t get much more blissfully peaceful than that – except for the occasional lowing cow, all is stillness here. Having said that, don’t worry: you won’t have to scramble across hills and dales for a pint as a traditional pub serving real ales and home-cooked food is right in the village of Peak Forest, a five-minute drive away. Both the site and the pub welcome dogs, though you'd be wise to keep them on a lead when walking past the farm animals. This is wild camping so facilities might not be abundant (there are no showers), but they are well maintained and include a portable toilet and a washing-up area. There is also fresh running water, and you’re welcome to start a campfire or a barbecue. You can grab essentials in the village shop, or head to Chapel-en-le-Frith (10 minutes' drive) or Buxton (15 minutes). If you’re here with the kids, the flat, grassy field where you’ll set up your tent makes for an excellent play area on which to run around, kick a ball or fly a kite. A nearby playground has swings, slides, a small adventure course and a multisports pitch. Walking paths start from right outside the farm, or you can drive to hiking areas like Chee Dale Stepping Stones (10 minutes), a dramatic gorge on the River Wye.

What customers say

Damside Campsite gets props for its ace Peak District spot, with stunning views and heaps of walks. Travellers love the clean loos. It's a quiet, no-frills site, but folks enjoyed the big, flat spots and friendly owners. Some said the pub and playground were a bit far, loos got packed sometimes, and watch out for sheep poo. Great for a chill break.

Liked Quiet location, surrounded by fields and beautiful views

Disliked Toilets were great, however, quickly became dirty with no toilet roll. After the morning rush they were clean again.
Allocated pitches would be ideal- when we got back to the pitch a car had pitched up right where our van was attaching to the drive away awning. Some families took over 2-3 pitches meaning the rest of us had small pitches

Liked Brilliant location, great little site, basic but has everything you need for a few days of peace and quiet with beautiful views.
Only 5/10 min drive to village pub and shop.
Small toilet block but spotlessly clean throughout our stay.
Would definitely stay again

Liked What a great little campsite! Beautiful flat open fields with great views, the toilet block was immaculately clean. No showers but I knew that when I booked and I was only there for 1 night anyway. Will definitely be returning!

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Fantastic, views for miles. Nice clean toilets and place to get water.large pitches. 15 min drive to each Buxton centre, super markets and Chee dale stepping stones. Great spot

Disliked Someone pitched up in a tiny gap at side of us when we went out for the day despite there being loads of room which was annoying but not the camp sites fault

Local attractions

Highlights in the Peak District include the Peak Cavern (15 minutes’ drive), a network of underground chambers that also hosts live music concerts; and the Mam Tor mountain, a not-too-challenging hike that rewards with far-reaching views of the surrounding hills. The spa town of Buxton (15 minutes) spreads around the Buxton Visitor Centre & The Buxton Crescent Experience, part of an elegant Georgian sweep and the place where you can learn more about the local health-giving waters. Buxton Opera House sits on the edge of the Pavilion Gardens, crossed by the River Wye – and by a miniature railway. Chatsworth House (half an hour) is well worth a visit, whether you want to relax along the banks of the River Derwent with a picnic, or explore the 105-acre garden, with its statuary and waterworks. The impressive Painted Hall, in the elegant 18th-century mansion, is covered in dramatic and vibrant frescoes.
