Forest hikes, lakeside walks, mountain ascents… zoom along to Camping Zip, in the little village of Kremna, to plonk yourselves in prime position for all such alfresco outings. This rural spot half an hour’s drive from Užice is in a most handy location for the Tara National Park, a few minutes’ drive away and packed with pretty lakes and rivers to roam around, or mountains to climb (or railways to ride if you're feeling less energetic…) The folk on site are keen for guests not to go astray, so they’re happy to help organise excursions and run walks around the village or into its scenic surrounds. And they’ll easily keep you busy on site, too – there’s a hectare of space to play with here, so they’ve set up a mini football pitch, volleyball and basketball courts and a playground with trampoline, playhouse and swings. If you need a bit of time indoors, head to the games room to play table tennis or billiards or retreat to the communal lounge to cook meals in the kitchen, put your feet up in front of the TV or socialise with pals old and new by the open fire. Supplies (for indoor cooking or for your barbie) can be acquired at the supermarket in the village, as can even easier meals in the local restaurant. It’ll take only a few minutes to wander over there, or you can hire bikes on site to pedal over if you prefer.

Lokale seværdigheder

Start your sojourn with a canter around Kremna, learning a bit about the prophetic peasant brothers that once lived here with a visit to the memorial house. After that, make your way to Mokra Gora (10 minutes’ drive) for a ride on the narrow-gauge Šargan Eight railway through some truly spectacular scenery on the edge of the Tara National Park. Want to get further immersed in the park? Walks and mountain bike trails are plentiful – if you don’t know where to start, aim for Solotnik Fort (half an hour’s drive), 13th-century Rača monastery or Zaovine Lake (an hour). To really give the legs a workout, plan an assault on Mount Tara (half an hour), a peak so pretty the Slavic god Tar chose to make his home there. Taking a break from the park, you might like to consider visits to Sirogojno (an hour) to wander around an old Serbian village that’s been turned into a open-air museum, venturing underground at Potpeće Cave (50 minutes) or paying tribute to fallen soldiers at the Kadinjača Memorial Complex (half an hour) – an atmospheric site with stunning views.
