They say it’s the little things that count, and there are plenty of personal touches at the award-winning Studfold Caravan and Camping Park in North Yorkshire: a warm welcome from the owners when you arrive, a modern and immaculate shower block with disabled facilities, hair driers and free hot water, a covered washing up area ready equipped with cloths and washing up liquid and even your Sunday paper delivered to the park shop on request; it’s no wonder this park was described by a happy camper as ‘a little piece of heaven’. The setting is tiptop too, tranquilly located in the Upper Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and just the spot to use as a de-stressing base for exploring the history and scenery of this picturesque dale. Bug hunters will love the award-winning adventure trail designed for families with primary and preschool children; there are activities, secret boxes, a picturesque old barn and lots of clues to hunt down, and once again the personal touch of Studfold is apparent: if you’re doing the trail you can drop your picnic in at the office and the staff will deliver it for you to the barn. There’s a small food shop at reception a short walk away from the touring area, a launderette on site and a big play area for youngsters. Studfold is keen to welcome families as it’s a quiet family-oriented park – and they rightly want to show off the adventure trail too…

Lokale seværdigheder

The surrounding area has something for everyone, whether you want to unwind among the scenery, dander over the dales or be a culture vulture around the local attractions. There are two pubs within a short distance, both called the Crown: the Lofthouse one is ten minutes’ walk from Studfold for pub grub and good wine (bring a torch if you’re planning on walking back after dark). The Crown in the cobblestoned village of Middlesmoor will have you earning your drink by clambering up the steep hill to it, but once you’re nicely refreshed you can get your heartbeat back to normal relaxing in the churchyard opposite with its tasty view. There’s a good variety of nearby restaurants catering for all budgets and tastes – and the oldest sweet shop in England at Pateley Bridge. Pateley Bridge is also the start and end point for the 53 mile Nidderdale Way looping around the Nidd Valley for cycling, horse-riding, walking – and llama leading with Nidderdale Llamas. You can make this part of the Dales your own history tour too by taking in the limestone gorge of How Stean Gorge – nicknamed ‘Little Switzerland’ by the Victorians – the ghost village of Scar House and the Capability Brown gardens of the 700 year old Ripley Castle; go into Ripley afterwards to see the stocks at its medieval market cross. Within a short drive of Studfold there are stacks of other historical and cultural options taking in castles, country houses, abbeys and museums…there’s Richmond Castle and Fountains Abbey, the National Children’s Museum at Eureka and the Wensleysdale Cheese Museum at Hawes (yes, they do give out samples), the seventeenth century Moulton Hall at Richmond and England’s best-preserved Carthusian house the Mount Grace Priory.
