Camping Elizabeth

It'd be sensible to spend the first few days on the beach first after arrival at Camping Elizabeth, possibly in a valiant attempt to get through the entire eats and drinks menu of the sandside taverna... For exploring after that, a bus stop 300 metres away from the site connects it with the main towns and attractions of the island, or you could (should) walk or pedal the four kilometres from Elizabeth to the tavernas, shops and another spectacular beach at Rethymno. Hikers can head to the Samarian Gorge about 100 kilometres away, a bit of a trek but well worth the trip as it's Europe's longest canyon at nearly 16 kilometres. It starts in the mountain forests of Xylóskala and runs all the way to Siderespórtes, with its cliff walls rising up nearly 1,000 feet. Famed historical sites at Knossos, the ancient city of Phaistos and the cities of Heraklio and Chania are within about 90 minutes.
