Even a quick look at the pictures of the scenery and accommodation at Argoed Barns is likely to bring out a little ‘wow’ – so you can probably imagine how fabulous it is to spend a night or few at this Powys site in real life… Up on a hillside just outside the Bannau Brycheiniog/Brecon Beacons National Park and 10 minutes’ drive from Brecon, this is a special spot indeed, with stunning views all around by day and gloriously sparkling stargazing by night (thanks to its position within a designated Dark Sky Reserve). Not that the folk here have relied on the surroundings alone to wow their visitors – the glamping accommodation (for adults only) is equally starry, with an ensuite bathroom (towels provided), comfy bed and heating inside and a picnic table and barbecue outside for meals with a view. There are lots of little luxuries here, including slippers and dressing gowns… and you’ll need them for what’s surely the highlight: your own private hot tub where you can sip bubbles while bubbling away in these gorgeous rural surroundings. If you can drag yourself away from this lovely little corner of the world, it’s worth knowing that there’s plenty to fill your days with around the site: Hay Bluff, the Black Mountains and Llangorse Lake are some of the top locations nearby for a hike (likely to be all the sweeter knowing you can soak in the hot tub at the end of it all). Brecon has a good collection of places to eat – and you may also like to know that renowned pub the Felin Fach Griffin is about a mile away…

If you’d like to work up an appetite for dinner (in the pub or on the barbecue), there are lots of places to get out for a good hike nearby. You can reach one of the trailheads for Pen y Fan with a 20-minute drive, take a waterside stroll at Pontsticill Reservoir (35 minutes) or head to Hay Bluff (half an hour), at the northern edge of the Black Mountains. For other outdoor pursuits, there’s canoeing on the River Wye from Glasbury (15 minutes), horse riding and watersports at Llangorse Lake (20 minutes), and incredibly fragrant wild swimming in the lake at Farmers’ Welsh Lavender (half an hour). The many bookshops and other independent shops make Hay-on-Wye (25 minutes) a lovely place to poke around in for a while; for other chilled-out days, maybe go wine tasting at Sugar Loaf Vineyards (35 minutes), see big birds in action at the Red Kite Feeding Station (40 minutes) or take a woolly alpaca for a walk with Alpaca My Boots (20 minutes).
