Picture yourself sitting on a bench in the sheltered stable yard in the company of a gang of hens, then taking a stroll to pet friendly and fluffy yard cat Rio or to buy some fresh free-range eggs from your host… If you think that picture seems pretty agreeable, you’ll need to set off to Larkhill Cottage Camping and Caravan Site, in the Cheshire countryside just under 10 minutes’ drive from Malpas. As an added bonus, this place looks out over some of the area’s most stunning scenery, with views towards Clwyd, Shropshire, the Wirral, Merseyside and Peak District. And to help you get out and explore, it also happens to be a mere five minutes’ walk from the Sandstone Trail… Friendly owner Claire has made sure her site has plenty of space for family games, as well as plenty of handy facilities. Amenities include a kitchen (with a fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave, kettle and toaster) and a toilet that’s got a basin with hot and cold running water (but please note you’ll need to bring your own soap and toilet paper). There's also a shower, handily enough. For meals and supplies, there’s a general store in Malpas and the site is two minutes from a chip shop and a good Indian restaurant. Whitchurch is 10 minutes' drive away, with a choice of supermarkets as well as a regular farmers' market.

Kedvelték: Beautiful site that is really well kept and not over crowded. The kids loves the horses and chickens and the spacious plot so they had freedom to run and play without getting anywhere near the other campers.

Kedvelték: - Relatively small campsite which was quiet for the time of year we visited (mid September). - Camp site owners were friendly and met us on arrival. - Walks nearby which eventually take you into Malpas

Nem kedvelték: - Lots of recycling facilities but was nothing for general waste. Was asked to take it home with us. - Only one shower which may be an issue if the camp site was busy. Needed to wear flip flops (or some kind of foot wear to shower in) as the toilet/shower was integrated. This meant muddy footwear would be in the same area. - Difficult to connect to the internet (which isnt essential at camping)

Kezelői megjegyzés: Thank you for taking the time to send your review. All rubbish can be re cycled. There are bins for food waste.....cardboard and all paper and bins for all other packaging..tins. .glass foil and all plastics. The only other waste is sanitary and nappies etc in the bins which are to be found in the toilets. I put this waste in my own black bin on a daily basis. Before the Council changed their re cycling bins, I had black bins and my own re cycling bins. I then had to sift all the rubbish into the tubs which the council provided.this was a disgusting job because despite numerous instructions, campers just mixed all their rubbish . When I say please take all non recyclable rubbish home, I am referring to unwanted camping equipment which despite numerous polite requests posted around the camp site, campers continue to dump their unwanted equipment which means a twelve mile round trip for me to the dump. The weekend you stayed, I only had one other couple and I found a blue canvas chair left by the bins. With regard to the shower, it is a wet room situated directly off the field so there is bound to be some grass cuttings and some mud occasionally. The shower floor has not been a success and will be replaced with rubber flooring for next season.

Kedvelték: Quiet site, great location, good kitchen facilities, microwave, washing machine, kettle, fridge freezer. Washing up liquid and tea towels available. Pleasant and helpful host. Good value for money

Nem kedvelték: Shower room floor poor quality, difficult to squeegee and no shower curtain. Lack of hanging hooks in shower area. Shower area toilet had no hot water available for hand washing, no toilet paper provided.

Kezelői megjegyzés: Thank you for your review. Because the shower is a wet room a curtain isn't necessary and would be unhygienic. There is a plastic chair in the shower and a towel ring plus long plastic handles situated all round the room . There will be a new floor installed for next season. I.dont provide toilet paper because campers kept taking them and one weekend I put in around thirty toilet rolls! I'm afraid it wasn't logistically possible to have hot and cold water in the basin where shower is but there is hot water in the toilet behind the kitchen .

Kedvelték: The owner was very welcoming and informative regarding any local eateries. Plenty of space between hook up pitches.

Útvonalirányok

If approaching from A49 from the north, turn right signed Cholmondeley, opposite the Cholmondeley arms, vice versa from south. Go through the woods and Shay Lane is the second left, turn opposite a gatehouse to Cholmondeley castle. Also look out for a sign for Hampton Springs Fishery. The site is opposite the fishery. Drive through the stable yard and under the arch to the site. Hook-ups are on the left, past the hen run. Don't drive on the far right of the field as it can sometimes be wet. If approaching from A41 south, Shay Lane is the last turn to the right before reaching the Hampton roundabout, again see sign for Hampton Springs Fishery. If approaching from the north, Shay Lane is first left after the Hampton Roundabout. Up a fairly steep narrow lane and the site is in the dip on the left. If the gate is shut, don't worry: it won't be locked even though there's a chain visible.

Setting off for a stroll on the Sandstone Trail is a great idea, of course – but if you fancy a different way to take in the scenery perhaps you’d prefer to settle down for a while at Hampton Springs fishing ponds, a minute’s walk away, or take your golf clubs over to Carden park golf course (15 minutes’ drive). For something a bit more kid-friendly, there are play areas and events in the gardens at Cholmondeley Castle (three minutes’ drive), or you could take a tasty trip to The Ice Cream Farm (20 minutes), which has a whole lot of activities as well as the ice cream itself. And of course, there's always the option of hitting the beach, given that the North Wales coast is less than an hour's drive away. Chester (half an hour) is another great place for a day out, whether you plan to go shopping, visit the castle, stroll the historic streets or stop by to see the animals in the zoo. If you’d like to see more animals, take a trip to the Blue Planet Aquarium (35 minutes) or book in to see a showjumping event at Bolesworth Castle (10 minutes).
