If you’re heading down to the Costa Blanca coast for the day, trendy Altea’s black-shingle Olla Beach (20 minutes’ drive) is the closest option, with another pebble stretch at Platja Mascarat (25 minutes). A car journey of half an hour will see you on Benidorm’s lively beaches, with stretches of sands heading west to the pretty resort of Villajoyosa (40 minutes). If you’re happy to stay closer to home base, you can swim in the crystalline waters of the Algar River. Kampaoh Fonts d’Algar is also the gateway to hiking in the Sierra de Bernia foothills – try the circular route to the Forat de Bernia (four hours’ walk), where a natural stone tunnel through the mountaintop opens onto far-reaching vistas down to the Med. However, the kids will probably pester you until they get to visit the animatronic dinosaurs at DinoPark Algar (five minutes’ drive), or you can take toddlers to ride the gentle carousels at Luca Park (half an hour), keeping an eye on them as you hoover up tapas from the adjoining street stalls.
