  • Remote campground deep in the West Texas desert
  • A 30-minute drive from Van Horn; McDonald Observatory 90 minutes
  • Spectacular views over the Van Horn and Wylie mountains
Go wild style with a stay at Desert Gardens Oasis, a campground with RV, trailer and tent sites deep in the West Texas desert. Set a few minutes' drive from Highway 90 and with spectacular views over the Van Horn and Wylie mountains, this off-grid location is an excellent choice for those looking to disconnect and tune in to the sights and sounds of the natural world. You're free to set up pretty much wherever you like on this uncrowded campground. Facilities include well-maintained restrooms and shower access, as well as barbecues and picnic tables that are provided for out of doors grilling. On top of that, there are opportunities to get involved in meditation, yoga or jogging – just ask staff for details. Other possibilities here include hiking, caving, paragliding and desert golf. This campground is just a few miles from the Mexican border and surrounded by deserts and mountains. It will take you about half an hour to get to Van Horn, the closest town, where you can stock up on food, treat yourself to a dinner out or learn about the local area's past at Culberson County Historical Museum. Ranch tours and other Lone Star State attractions can be sought out here too.

Liked: I loved the proximity to the RV spots and other campers, we were far enough away to have privacy but close enough in case we needed anything. Absolutely beauty tent camping spot as well, our tent opened straight into a view of the desert mountains. The staff was very nice and made us feel very welcomed and safe.

Local attractions

Drive or hike past canyons, rock formations, a 19th-century ranch house and a movie set… Red Rock Ranch Tours (30 minutes' drive) will let you explore this ranch in full. It’s just one place where there are nuggets of history for vacationers to dive into… Second is the transcontinental railway in Sierra Blanca, now named the Hudspeth County Railroad Depot Museum (an hour) and third, the Fort Davis National Historic Site (an hour and 15 minutes), where Buffalo soldiers once fought from a military post, and now, you’re free to conquer the land yourself with one of the many historical hikes. Those of you who are rather the contemporary art fan will find such a museum at The Chinati Foundation (an hour). If stars, planets and everything spacey is more up your alley, then the McDonald Observatory (an hour and a half) will fit the bill. Climbing, hiking, mountaineering and other outdoorsy pursuits are on the cards at Mount Livermore (an hour and a half), a spectacular summit.
