Always longed to get out on backcountry trails in the Appalachian Mountains wilderness? Well, here’s the place for you. The campground at Brimstone® Retreats in Huntsville gives guests direct access to 19,196 acres of remote northeast Tennessee in the heart of Appalachia. That’s around 300 miles of amazing ATV trails – as well as a host of other outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, canoeing, kayaking, or fishing for walleye, small mouth, muskie, and redeye on New River. When you need to catch your breath after all that activity, picnic tables, charcoal grills, and a soothing riverfront location await back at base camp – so when you’re all set up on your easy-access campground, take time to sit back, relax, and listen to the river flow on by. Simple amenities on-site include a shower unit with private showers and loos. You can get together with fellow campers at the Counsel House Firepit – Nathan’s Place for some good old country talk and a barbecue (pick up supplies at Scenic Foods or head into Huntsville (both five minutes’ drive) for pizza or Chinese take-out.

Local attractions

There’s so much to explore hereabouts, whether on two or four wheel or horseback: you can ride horses along upland trails in Big South Fork National Park (20 minutes’ drive), go whitewater rafting on the Big South Fork River, and mountain biking through the backcountry. Or how about sitting back and enjoying a chug through the park from Stearns to Blue Heron on the Big South Fork Scenic Railway? Jump in your vehicle to explore this wild corner of Appalachia. Norris Lake (two hours) makes a scenic circular trip from the campground, with watersports and boat rental on the lake, surrounded by mountain foothills. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park (an hour) offers birdwatching opportunities and hiking trails leading to the spectacular, horseshoe-shaped Cumberland Falls (nicknamed ‘Little Niagara’). To learn about the backstory of the region, head to Historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary (55 minutes) for self-guided tours of the cells and execution site inside Tennessee’s first maximum-security prison. On a brighter note, wander the open-air museum packed with old-world houses at Historic Rugby (25 minutes).
