  • Dog-friendly forest setting surrounded by the Finger Lakes
  • A 25-minute drive from Canandaigua and Seneca Lake
  • Fire ring, firewood and benches provided in the woods; fishing nearby
Whether it’s your first, second, third or umpteenth time at Finger Lakes, it’s highly likely you’ll appreciate the watersports, walks and lakeside parks in these neck of the woods… and if you’re searching for a forest setting to go hand-in-hand with all that natural scenery, have a look at Mountainside Camp, a dog-friendly wildlife haven with sites in the forest and at the driveway’s end. A wildlife haven this is indeed, with seasonal creeks on each side of the retreat and state fishing available in the creek half an hour’s walk away. The woods are very private feeling and primitive in style too, as there’s just a portable toilet at the end of the driveway by way of facilities and a fire ring surrounded by benches. Naturally, wildlife also likes this patch of land: deer often pass by and owls get a-tooting at night. There’s plenty of firewood around the woods if you’d like to cast some light on the surrounds, and of course there’s no shortage of trees if you’d like to string up a hammock between two trunks. Whether you fancy yourself a midnight snack or the promise of crunchy cereal for breakfast, that’s no issue, with Naples five minutes’ drive away. The town has a farmers’ market, convenience stores, antique shops, restaurants and a gorgeous Creekside park called Grimes Glen Park for hikes.

Local attractions

Very handily, Mountainside Camp is around 60 miles from nine of the 11 Finger Lakes, with the remaining two being slightly further out. The closest of the 11 Finger Lakes is Canandaigua Lake. If you want a dip – and you want it fast – Vine Valley Beach (10 minutes’ drive) should be your first stop. Further north is the city of Canandaigua (25 minutes), where you’ll quickly get acquainted with the water through activities like wakeboarding. The city has major convenience stores and restaurants, along with the 50-acre Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park (25 minutes). The largest of all the 11 glacial lakes is within striking distance too. At Seneca Lake (25 minutes), sample Chardonnay and spicy Lemberger along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, try some trout fishing or captain a canoe or boat. Watkins Glen (50 minutes) has breweries, distilleries and 19 waterfalls.
