Dreaming of hols in the great wide open, with peaceful days on the water, hikes and bikes through greenery and scenery, and quiet evenings next to the fire? Don’t get in a flap – soar on over to the Playful Goose Campground, a family-friendly park five minutes’ drive from the small city of Horicon, Wisconsin. A 10-minute drive from Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area, this is a top spot for anyone who fancies spending a getaway out in the fresh area: head into the marsh for explores by canoe or kayak, cast a line at one of the fishing spots, land a seat on a boat tour or go off the beaten track for some geocaching, then follow the scenic hiking routes – the 34-mile Wild Goose State Trail is just 15 minutes away – for even more time out and about. This is a twitcher's paradise too, so keep eyes peeled for Canada geese, pelicans, herons, egrets and eagles. Your adventures don’t have to end when you’re in need of a day at home base – the campground is beside the Rock river, and you can hire canoes and boats for leisurely floats on the water. If you’d prefer to stay on dry land, you can fish from the pier, challenge your buddies to a game of volleyball, embrace your inner retiree with some shuffleboard and horseshoes, or take a dip in the indoor heated pool. When you’re ready for some eats, wander over to the small store for basic supplies for the barbecue or make your way into town to try out some local grub. Spend your evening kicking back next to the campfire and finding nature-filled zen, then be sure to get a good night’s sleep so you’re ready for more of the same tomorrow.

Local attractions

Need a break from all the action? Slow things down with a midweek stop at Kiwanis Park, five minutes’ drive from base, where there are gigs and farmers’ markets every Wednesday from June through August. If you’re out of your gourd (sorry) for fresh produce, time your visit for fall and you can have a leisurely day of pumpkin picking – and farm rides and explores – over at Waldvogel’s Farm, 10 minutes away. For more energetic pursuits, make your way to Fond du Lac, 45 minutes away on the shores of Lake Winnebago. As well as distillery tours and tastings, and a historic house and museum, this is a top destination for getting out on the water for paddleboarding, surfing, kitesurfing and kayaking. If you’re craving a city day, Milwaukee is a little over an hour away for brewery and distillery tours, a Harley-Davidson museum and the Milwaukee County Zoo.
