  • Stay on a dog-friendly, eight-acre U-pick berry farm
  • A 10-minute drive to the Niangua River; Fantastic Caverns, 40 minutes
  • Miles of horseback or walking trails and a recreation area on site
With over eight acres of U-pick berry fields, including five different types of berries and over 5000 bushes, the dog-friendly B Berry Farms is as sweet as it sounds. In the surrounding area, fishing rivers, caverns and other splendid spots are ripe for the picking. That includes access to the Charity Access, Niangua River, 10 minutes’ drive away, where there’s a boat ramp and good birdwatching or fishing for rock bass, sunfish, catfish, black bass and suckers. The Missouri berry farm has acres of horseback riding trails and for those who want to delve deeper, there are trails that head into the thick of the woods. As well as sprouting bucketfuls of berries, the farm sells natural skincare products. The property is private, so you’ll be primed to focus on your relaxation. Where might you unwind, then? Well, first and foremost, there’s a solar shower house to freshen up in. Then, head to the recreation room based in a newly-renovated barn, where there’s a darts board and horseshoe pitching areas. There are barbecues and sandboxes scattered around the property. So, kids can get digging when they’re restless and the lot of you can bond over burgers and other tasty grilled goods. There are convenience stores in Fair Grove (15 minutes’ drive) or Marshfield (20 minutes).

Local attractions

You don’t necessarily have to snooze as soon as night falls. The Baker Observatory (10 minutes’ drive) puts together free public events on selected dates. That’s if you’re not too sleepy after a day out on the 860-acre Fellows Lake (25 minutes), which has trails and fishing activities (with bass, crappie and walleye). Next up: historic caves? To get into Crystal Cave, Springfield Missouri (25 minutes), you’ll pass through iron gates belonging to the old Springfield jail. Underground, there are two-feet-tall stalagmites, flowstone and other cool formations, as well as the site of a 1900s mushroom garden. Fantastic Caverns (40 minutes) is another impressive cave. This place might feel like a theme park ride, as you’ll go underground on a tram drawn by a jeep. For scenery? Expect to see an underground river, flowstones and stalagmites. Those after some urban action can track down Springfield (35 minutes) too. The city has a zoo and a discovery centre with dinosaur and DNA exhibitions.
