  • On the banks of the Indälsälven, 15 minutes' walk from Hammarstrand
  • Five minutes' drive from Kullstabacken ski area
  • Café-restaurant, communal kitchen, canoe hire and heated swimming pool
Different folks have different reasons for selecting a lakeside stay. Fishing folks will be seeking a jetty to cast their rod from (and award extra points for a cleaning station to prepare their catch), while explorers will be scoping out canoe launching points and open-water swimmers eying up beaches from which to wade into the water. All the above are well catered for at Hammarstrands Camping, a peaceful place on the banks of the Indälsläven and a 15-minute amble from the amenities of Hammarstrand town. From here there’s direct access to the lake for swimmers and anglers, and canoes to hire for those who fancy heading off to more remote corners of the lake. And what if your idea of an ideal lakeside day mainly involves alfresco feasting while gazing out over the water? Well, you’re most welcome here too – the café-restaurant can sort breakfasts, drinks, snacks and meals to eat in or cart off to a viewsome corner. They also do an excellent range of ice creams to keep the nippers happy, and an equally fab line in fika (coffee with pastries) for the more grownup sweet tooth. If you’re the type that prefers your waters somewhat warmer, you’ll no doubt be chuffed to note that the site has a heated swimming pool and a toilet block with free hot showers. There’s also a communal kitchen/dining room and you’re welcome to light up a barbie (splendid news for those who’ve had some success with the fish).

Local attractions

If you fancy stretching your legs, you’re in a good place – there are three hiking routes around the Vättaberget mountain (four kilometres away) or you could head to Forsaleden, a little over an hour’s drive away, to seek out waterfalls and ancient rock paintings. Should you be seeking a gentler stroll, roam locally to pick berries, take a trip to the Döda Fallet dry waterfall, potter through the Royal Thai Pavilion’s gardens or wander around the old church in the village of Ragunda – all are within 20 minutes’ drive. Those who’d prefer to paddle can hire canoes on site to take out on the Indälsälven at their own pace, or hook up with a local guide to help you spot beavers living around the lake. Come by in winter for all manner of snow-and-ice antics: family-friendly ski slopes are five minutes away at Kullstabacken, and you can also take ice fishing, dog sledding or snowmobile excursions. Being well away from urban sprawl, this is also a fab place to spot the Northern Lights.
