  • Tranquil wooded site on the edge of the Urbasa y Andía Natural Park
  • Waterfalls, natural pools and hiking trails in nearby nature reserve
  • Two Finnish saunas and outdoor hot tub
This sumptuous Spanish site just outside the village of Artaza in Navarra is handily placed for visits to Basaula Nature Reserve and Urbasa y Andía Natural Park to give you outdoor activity opps galore. And as one might expect due to its proximity to such places, it's all most pretty too, set snugly among larch, oak and beech trees in the Ameskoa Tierra Estella valley, at the foot of the Sierra de Lóquiz mountain range. Off site, several highly pleasant walks lie nearby, including one to waterfalls two kilometres from Camping Artaza (a map of local routes is available at reception); this spot is also an excellent base for visiting Urbasa y Andía Natural Park for adrenalised activities such as climbing and cycling, as well as for birdwatching in Basaula Nature Reserve. Camping Artaza has spectacular views in all directions, and facilities here are designed to keep guests super relaxed, with two Finnish saunas and an outdoor hot tub for steaming and soaking in, as well as an indoor cooking area for self-catered banquets and mealtime mingles with other guests. If you’d rather let someone else cook for you, a restaurant is nearby. Pitches are easily level as well as grassy, spacious and partially shaded; guests rave about the spicko amenities block too, which is always spotlessly clean and furnished with soap and toilet paper. As this is set among remote countryside, the night sky remains dark enough for stargazers to admire the constellations above – just be sure to bring a flashlight to move around the site at nighttime.

Local attractions

This remote rural locale makes hikes around the surrounding countryside a cinch. Two kilometres from base in Basaula Nature Reserve there’s a five-kilometre hiking trail, along which you can keep your peepers peeled for griffon, Egyptian vultures, kites and eagles; several smashing turquoise waterfall pools lie around here for dips and paddles among nature too. More hiking can be had around the Bardenas Reales, which comprises 42,000 hectares of semi-desert natural region inhabited by vultures and other wild critters, as well as in Urbasa y Andía Natural Park, where you can also try out climbing and traverse heaps of cycling routes. For day trips among historic hotspots, the 14th-century Royal Palace of Olite – a fortress complex with towers, battlements, courtyards and gardens – and Pamplona – famed for its Running of the Bulls festival (aka the Feast of San Fermín) in July – are both around an hour’s drive away.
