  • Peaceful site surrounded by vineyards a 10-minute drive from Manresa
  • Abbey of Montserrat half an hour’s drive; Barcelona one hour
  • Electric hook-up, toilet block and showers; wine tasting (for a fee)
At Oller del Mas, you’ll be staying in the middle of a banana plantation with distant views of the Montserrat mountain. If that sounds peaceful and remote, it is – but this family-friendly site is also only a 10-minute drive from the Catalonian city of Manresa, so you’re never too far from modern comforts (whether that be restaurants or shops). Part of the Margenat family’s centuries-old estate (and complete with medieval castle), the site is surrounded by vineyards that you can visit by carriage or on horseback; you can also book a tasting session of the wines they produce. Please note, there is an additional fee for both activities, and also for access to on-site facilities like the outdoor pool, the fitness centre and padel courts, and the children’s playground. You can drive right up to your expansive pitch (which comes with electric hook-up) and set up in the shade of tall trees. Other amenities include drinking water, toilet block and showers, a washing-up area, and charging points for electric vehicles. The surrounding area is a hiker’s (and wildlife enthusiast’s) paradise: head to the Gorg de les Escaletes (10 minutes’ drive) to see gentle cascades emptying into basins populated by turtles and mink. Alternatively, choose between the Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat (half an hour), with trails of varying degrees of difficulty, keeping an eye out for wild goats and peregrine falcons; or the Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac (half an hour), which is also popular with climbers. Back to base, you can have regional specialities at the on-site restaurant – and wash them down with the estate-produced wine, of course.

Local attractions

Surrounded by imposing rocky peaks, the 16th-century Abbey of Montserrat (half an hour’s drive) houses a much-revered statue of the patron saint of Catalonia, a Black Madonna, as well as an art museum with works by the likes of Salvador Dalí and El Greco. If you can, time your visit with a performance by the Escolanía, a boys’ choir. For an evening of stargazing, head to the remote Observatori Astronòmic de Castelltallat (half an hour), in the Serra de Castelltallat national park. In addition to an interpretation centre with multimedia displays, there are powerful telescopes through which you can admire nebulae and star clusters. Spend a day in Barcelona (one hour), checking out Antoni Gaudí’s unfinished Sagrada Família basilica, alongside other impressive architecture, from the Modernist Güell Palace to the Art Nouveau Palau de la Música Catalana. Afterwards, stroll along the tree-lined Ramblas all the way to the seafront for a visit to the aquarium.

FHU forest floor tent or RV campsite

Liked: Samuel was very helpful and welcoming, that is it.

Disliked: I had to clear the pitch (if you can call it that) before setting up, the pitch was just some pallet banding around the trees, very small areas, the walk to the restaurant was long and not signposted, the restaurant manager was not very welcoming when he heard we were on the motorhome pitches, the walk back was just ridiculous, both my wife and myself slipped and fell over on the steep gravel, unlit and unmarked path, this was the most expensive place at 64 euros we have ever stayed and was most disappointed, pitch you need to look at this site, fellow travelers, DO NOT STOP HERE.
