  • Self-contained cottages with sea views on the Agate Terrace
  • Half an hour's drive or short ferry ride from Port St Johns
  • Well-equipped kitchens, plus outdoor area with portable barbecue
If surfing, fishing and coastal walks are your bag, Kingfisher Cottages will suit you to a tee: it’s a peaceful site with self-contained cottages on the Agate Terrace cliffs, just across the Umzimvubu river from Port St Johns. There's some fab fishing to be done nearby, both on the seashore and in the river, and there are also several gorgeous beaches within easy reach. Nearby Port St Johns is a hub for hiking trails and boat trips. Cottages here are well kitted out with fully-equipped kitchens, bathrooms and TVs (although you’ll need to bring your own decoder). Outside, each has its own private area with a portable barbecue and some cracking views over the lush gardens to the sea beyond. For food, there’s a ferry a few minutes’ walk away that can whisk guests across the river in a matter of minutes (between dawn and dusk), or it’s a half an hour's drive to town for shops, pubs and restaurants. You can also quench your thirst at a bar close to the site.

Local attractions

Some humongous fish have been caught in the Umzimvubu river (perhaps you’ll add your name to the list?) and fishing off the rocks at Poenskop beach is another popular local angling spot. Both are within walking distance of the site. Isinuka Sulphur Springs a 25-minute drive away are believed to have special healing powers, with the sulphur water traditionally used to cure stomach and skin problems. Cover yourself with the good stuff and then take a dip in a sacred pool to cleanse… bliss. If wildlife watching's more your thing, whale sighting expeditions and photographic boat trips leave from Port St. Johns (30 minutes), which also has a world-class 18-hole golf course. Waterfall and beach walks are close to the site too: see what species you can spy on your strolls. The forested coastal valley of Silaka Nature Reserve (40 minutes) will have birdwatchers up at the crack of dawn gripping their binoculars; the coastline makes for a memorable and picworthy adventure too.
