  • Well-maintained site overlooking Slovenia’s forested Tuhinj Valley
  • Kamnik 20 minutes’ drive; Ljubljana 50 minutes
  • Yoga sessions and climbing courses; bike hire; breakfast basket
Now, this is a top spot for anyone in search of active recreation – and what a spectacular backdrop for your hikes and climbs, with forested hills pretty much as far as the eye can see. GoLife Center sits in the Tuhinj Valley of Slovenia, a 20-minute drive from the town of Kamnik. It’s a well-maintained site with a strong sustainable vibe: it has recycling facilities and charging points for electric cars, for starters. Better still, though: if you arrive by public transport, the owners will be happy to pick you up from the bus station on the Golice road (it’s less than a kilometre away, but you might not want to walk it while lugging your backpack). Then, once on site, you can hire a set of wheels (push or e-bike) and zip around these hills independently to your heart’s content. If hiking and mountain biking are not enough for your daredevil-ly tastes, you might want to sign up for the on-site climbing course or have a go at the slackline. And at the end of the day, a yoga session ought to soothe those well-exercised muscles… The site arranges a breakfast basket with cheese, jam and other delicious offerings – most of them produced within the local area. For anything else you might need for the barbecue, the nearest shop is a five-minute drive away (and there are lots more options in Kamnik); if you’d rather someone else took care of the cooking (and the washing up), several restaurants within a 15-minute drive of the site serve traditional hearty meals.

Local attractions

The pretty medieval town of Kamnik is overlooked by a wooded hill topped by the ruins of the Stari Grad castle. There are unforgettable views of the distant mountains from here. In town, Mali Grad is a stone castle with a tower topped by an onion dome. The site sits in the foothills of Vivodnik (35 minutes’ drive), a forested peak in the middle of the Menina Planina plateau. A hike around these parts takes you past caves, curious cows grazing on alpine pastures, observation points like Biba Planina, and the diminutive, wooden Kapela Sv. Antona chapel. With its Baroque architecture, Ljubljana (50 minutes) is well worth a visit. Stop at Mestni trg, a pretty cobbled square centred on the Robbov vodnjak fountain, then take the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle, on a green hill with views of the city and the river.
