  • Holiday park in historic gardens, five minutes’ drive from Thames
  • Pinnacles Track 35 minutes’ drive; Waiomu village 35 minutes by bike
  • Pool, games room and basics store; shared kitchens and barbecue area
Tucked away in native bushland backed by mountain foothills, Dickson Holiday Park is a base camp to explore the spectacular Coromandel Peninsula – and it’s got a lot of history going on too. This quiet, family-oriented park is located in the former Tararu Gardens, planted in the 19th century by settlers looking to landscape the once-thriving gold town of Thames (five minutes’ drive). Most of all though, Dickson Holiday Park is a magnet for active campers intent on outdoor adventures like bush walks and long-distance cycling straight from the site (there’s bike rental and repair available too should you need either). Hereabouts there’s also a creek for swimming, great fishing (plus a dedicated fish-cleaning sink) and plenty of downtime for relaxing amid lush nature. A hiking track also starts from the site. Even if you don’t want to stir from your pitch, there’s plenty to keep you busy, from playing table tennis, miniature golf and basketball with new-found camping chums to swimming laps in the outdoor pool (open from November until April). If you’re travelling with kids, wear them out in the playground or borrow games and DVDs to keep them entertained; there’s a communal TV and DVD room for cuddly family moments. A small shop sells snacks and other essentials that you might have forgotten, like toothbrushes and sun lotion. Cooks are in the right place too, as there’s a shared kitchen with all the basics, plus a wooden pioneer kitchen and a barbecue corner for alfresco dining. Anything you need on the groceries front can be picked up in Thames.

Local attractions

Bushwalk anyone? There are a number of well-maintained routes straight from the holiday park, including Rocky’s Track leading through thick tropical forest. A 10-minute stroll from camp takes you to the Firth of Thames, famed for its fishing and colourful sunsets. The site is also handy for accessing the challenging Pinnacles Track (40 minutes’ drive), following a former packhorse and loggers’ path through the Kauaeranga Valley. Rent a bike and head for coastal Waiomu village (35 minutes’ bike ride) for a paddle in the sea, or cycle sections of the Hauraki Rail Trail (15 minutes). Other stunning bays nearby include Ngarimu (15 minutes) and Thornton (20 minutes), both peaceful sandy stretches with mountain views. To learn more about the region’s gold-mining heritage, head for the Thames Goldmine Experience to tour a former gold mine, or trace the town's backstory at the Thames Museum Te Whare Taonga o te Kauaeranga (both five minutes’ drive), where displays showcase life during the late-19th-century gold rush.
