  • Quiet Friesland glamping site five minutes' drive from Jubbega
  • Access to forest trails from the site; 45 minutes' drive to Groningen
  • Large pond for fishing and swimming; play area and barbecues
Head out into the scenic surroundings of south-east Friesland for a stay that’s got a fabulous mix of fresh air and comfort. Parc Bûten, in a quiet spot about five minutes’ drive from Jubbega, is a glamping site where you can settle down for an outdoor break without any need to set up a tent. Getting settled should be easy here – your accommodation is kitted out with beds, a mini kitchen and electric connections, and you’ll have access to a shared toilet/shower block and a bigger outdoor kitchen (with plenty of cooking utensils, plates, cutlery and the like) nearby. Each accommodation also has a barbecue provided, so it’s a good idea to bring along suitable meat, veg or whatever else you’d like to get going on the grill. Such an easy setup means you’ll quickly be free for the more important tasks of relaxing and/or exploring. The site is well placed for some lovely walking and bike routes in the surrounding area, and you can get a taste of this with a stroll on the forest path that runs from the back of the park. If the kids need something a bit more energetic, take them to the play area, which has a trampoline, seesaw and swing and is handily located next to a stretch tent where parents can supervise in comfort (it’s also a useful space for damp days). The real highlight for many, though, is the large pond that allows guests to go fishing or swimming in the fresh water – or simply to pull up a chair, pour a drink and gaze out at the water for a while…

Local attractions

Walking is a favourite pastime in these parts, and there are plenty of lovely trails around, from long hikes to shorter routes where kids can keep their eyes peeled for gnomes living in the woods. You’ll also have a choice of national parks for more outings: De Alde Feanen, Drents-Friese Wold and Dwingelderveld are all about half an hour’s drive away. If museum time is a little more your thing, pay a visit to the National Prison Museum (25 minutes’ drive) for a look behind the bars or to Villa Rams Woerthe (half an hour), a stately home where you’re encouraged to feel the curtains and sit on the sofas. The art-filled walls of Museum Valse Kunst in Vledder (25 minutes) are also worth a look. Stepping away from the rural air, you may like to take a day out in Groningen (45 minutes), for a canal boat trip, visits to Groninger Museum, Northern Shipping Museum and the huge Martinitoren tower, and a sip of the local beer at the Martinus brewery.
