  • Family-friendly site surrounded by forests of the Veluwe
  • Within 25 minutes’ drive of national parks, Arnhem and Apeldoorn
  • Outdoor pool with a kids’ pool; play area and sports pitches on site
Whether you’re going to the Veluwe to track down forests, sand drifts or lakes – or indeed, all three – you should find Vakantiecentrum De Hertenhorst to be a very handy base. It’s well-equipped for family breaks, with an outdoor pool and separate kids’ pool on site, as well as a play area and sports pitches, and the location is also top-notch for an active itinerary… Set in the forests of Beekbergen, the site is within striking distance of popular Gelderland cities and three – yes, three – national parks including the area’s famed sand drifts. If you consider yourself city folk, first strike north to see Apeldoorn (and Paleis Het Loo), and then go south to Arnhem – both are only a 20- to 25-minute drive away from the site. Those of you who are itching to get into the bicycle saddle or hiking boots can map out the way to local hiking and cycling trails instead. There’s quite a selection between Het Kootwijkerzand, Nationaal Park Veluwezoom (the oldest national park in Holland) and Het Nationale Park De Hoge Veluwe. Don’t fret if you get hot and sweaty after a day of watersports along the river Rhine in De Liemers, as back at base, there is a heated building with toilets and showers. Gorgeous cities and villages are all around, but for the closest grocery shopping spot, try Beekbergen five minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Apeldoorn (20 minutes’ drive) mainly rose to fame for being home to Paleis Het Loo (25 minutes), but it’s got plenty to brag about as the largest city in Veluwe. Its old town is well worth some wandering hours – and when you want to visit the palace, just save some more walking power for browsing the baroque gardens’ fountains or touring the palace. Arnhem (25 minutes) has a couple of talked-about spots too, particularly the Modekwartier fashion district and the 7 straatjes, streets lined with wine bars, restaurants and art stores. If you’re itching to know about the local national parks, begin by sizing up Nationaal Park Veluwezoom (25 minutes), the oldest national park in Holland. It has country houses, farms, estates and more than a few stunning trails past sand drifts and forests. If it’s sand drifts you’re after, the largest drifting sand area in western Europe is in Het Kootwijkerzand (25 minutes). Grab one of the recognisable (and free) white bicycles in Het Nationale Park De Hoge Veluwe (15 minutes) to explore the forest and heath on two wheels. In the park, the Kröller-Müller Museum (25 minutes) has the largest private Van Gogh collection on the globe.
