  • Smart lodge with views over watering hole visited by abundant wildlife
  • An hour and 15 minutes’ drive from safaris at Etosha National Park
  • Pool, guided walks, game drives, home-cooked food and campfire
Describing a stay at Ohange Namibia Lodge as a ‘once-in-a-lifetime experience’ is no exaggeration – the highlight of this serene sanctuary, an hour and 15 minutes’ drive from the eastern entrance of Etosha National Park, is its views over a watering hole visited by abundant animals. Mosey to this mountain retreat among the peaks of Otavi to watch the wildlife; it also has a hillside pool with a small thatched relaxation area set amid the multiple marula and tamboti trees overlooking stunning scenery, making it a dreamy place for using as a base when not seeking out the zebras, lions, rhinos and cheetahs at Etosha. More fauna’s to be fawned over closer by as well – afternoon game-viewing drives in search of creatures including eland and giraffes are organised by the site and thrill-seeking sorts can saunter off alone on walks along well-marked bush trails ranging between three and eight kilometres long. When it comes to eats, the park invites guests to dine on home-cooked food under the stars while spying on the floodlit watering hole. Warm and friendly owners Karla and Justus are also said to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of Namibia and are happy to dole out tips to guests chatting around the campfire. Rather stay active as night falls? Join one of the post-dusk ventures to seek out bushbabies, porcupines and genet as the skies darken – some guests have also been lucky enough to lay eyes on leopards out prowling in the wild…

Local attractions

Exploring the eastern section of Etosha National Park is possible on a day trip where visitors drive from watering hole to watering hole in the hopes of honing in on rare wildlife like lions, elephants and rhino. Other cool creatures to be seen include warthogs, hyenas and cheetahs, whether in the bush, out on the plains or on the salt pan of this spectacular landscape. Get a glimpse of even more animals while bounding around base on a guided hike – African birdlife is especially prevalent in the area, with more than 250 species to see – or set off on your own with eyes peeled for paradise flycatchers, giant eagle owls and cape vultures. You’re also likely to see wildebeest while out on a wander. Fancy mixing things up? Head off on a visit to Otjikoto Lake (half an hour), a scenic sinkhole filled with water, or hotfoot it to Hoba for a look at the largest meteorite in the world (an hour and five minutes).
